Jeremiah 15:15-21
15 LORD, you understand; remember me and care for me.
Avenge me on my persecutors.
You are long-suffering—do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.
16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, LORD God Almighty.
17 I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them;
I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation.
18 Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable?
You are to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails.
19 Therefore this is what the LORD says:
“If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me;
if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman.
Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
20 I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze;
they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you,”
declares the LORD.
21 “I will save you from the hands of the wicked and deliver you from the grasp of the cruel.” (NIV)

Hungry for God

A new believer in Jesus was desperate to read the Bible. However, he’d lost his eyesight and both hands in an explosion. When he heard about a woman who read Braille with her lips, he tried to do the same—only to discover that the nerve endings of his lips had also been destroyed. Later, he was filled with joy when he discovered that he could feel the Braille characters with his tongue! He had found a way to read and enjoy the Scriptures.
Joy and delight were the emotions the prophet Jeremiah experienced when he received God’s words. “When your words came, I ate them,” he said, “they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (Jeremiah 15:16). Unlike the people of Judah who despised His words (8:9), Jeremiah had been obedient and rejoiced in them. His obedience, however, also led to the prophet being rejected by his own people and persecuted unfairly (15:17).
Some of us may have experienced something similar. We once read the Bible with joy, but obedience to God led to suffering and rejection from others. Like Jeremiah, we can bring our confusion to God. He answered Jeremiah by repeating the promise He gave him when He first called him to be a prophet (vv. 19-21; see 1:18–19). God reminded him that He never lets His people down. We can have this same confidence too. He’s faithful and will never abandon us.—POH FANG CHIA

내가 주의 말씀을 얻어 먹었사오니 주의 말씀은 내게 기쁨과 내 마음의 즐거움이오나 [예레미야 15:16]
예수님을 처음 믿게 된 어떤 사람이 정말 간절한 마음으로 성경을 읽고 싶어 했습니다. 그러나 그는 폭발 사고로 시력과 양손을 이미 잃어버렸습니다. 그는 브라유 점자를 입술로 읽는 한 여성의 이야기를 듣고 자신도 따라해 보았지만 입술의 말초신경마저 손상된 사실만 알게 되었습니다. 나중에 혀의 감각으로 점자를 읽을 수 있다는 사실을 알고 그는 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다! 드디어 성경을 읽고 즐길 수 있는 방법을 찾게 된 것입니다.
예레미야 선지자도 하나님의 말씀을 받았을 때 기쁨과 즐거움을 느꼈습니다. 그는 “내가 주의 말씀을 얻어 먹었사오니 주의 말씀은 내게 기쁨과 내 마음의 즐거움”(예레미야 15:16)이라고 했습니다. 여호와의 말씀을 멸시한 유다 백성들(8:9)과는 달리 예레미야는 말씀 안에서 순종하고 기뻐했습니다. 그러나 그의 순종 때문에 선지자는 자기 백성들에게 거절당하고 부당하게 박해 당하기도 했습니다(15:17).
우리 중에도 이와 비슷한 경험을 한 사람들이 있을 것입니다. 한때는 기쁨으로 성경을 읽었지만 하나님께 순종하는 것 때문에 고난 받고 다른 사람들로부터 거절당하기도 했을 것입니다. 그럴 때에는 우리의 혼란한 상황을 예레미야처럼 하나님께 가지고 나오면 됩니다. 하나님은 예레미야를 처음 선지자로 부르실 때 주셨던 약속을 거듭 말씀하심으로써 그에게 응답하셨습니다 (19-21절; 1:18-19 참조). 하나님은 그분의 백성을 절대 실망시키지 않으신다는 것을 예레미야에게 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 우리도 이 같은 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 신실하신 하나님은 우리를 결코 버리지 않으십니다.
