The Book of Odds says that one in a million people are struck by lightning. It also says that one in 25,000 experiences a medical condition called “broken heart syndrome” in the face of overwhelming shock or loss. In page after page the odds of experiencing specific problems pile up without answering: What if we’re the one?
Job defied all odds. God said of him, “There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil” (Job 1:8). Yet Job was chosen to suffer a series of losses that defied all odds. Of all people on earth, Job had reason to beg for an answer. It’s all there for us to read in chapter after chapter of his desperate struggle to understand, “Why me?”
Job’s story gives us a way of responding to the mystery of unexplained pain and evil. By describing the suffering and confusion of one of God’s best examples of goodness and mercy (ch. 25), we gain an alternative to the inflexible rule of sowing and reaping (4:7–8). By providing a backstory of satanic mayhem (ch. 1) and an afterword (42:7–17) from the God who would one day allow His Son to bear our sins, the story of Job gives us reason to live by faith rather than sight.—MART DEHAAN

나를 당신의 과녁으로 삼으셔서 내게 무거운 짐이 되게 하셨나이까 [욥기 7:20]
‘확률 책’에 의하면 번개에 맞는 사람은 백만 명 중 한 명이라고 합니다. 그리고 엄청난 충격이나 상실에 직면하여 “상심 증후군”이라는 의학적 상태를 경험하는 것은 이만 오천 번 중 한 번이라고 합니다. 이 책의 페이지를 계속 넘기면 각기 특별한 문제들을 경험할 수 있는 확률이 계속 나오는데, ‘만일 우리가 그것을 경험하는 한 명이라면?’ 이라는 질문에 대한 답은 보여주지 않습니다.
욥은 이 모든 확률에 해당되지 않는 경험을 했습니다. 하나님은 욥에 대해 “그와 같이 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자는 세상에 없느니라”(욥기 1:8)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그럼에도 욥은 어떤 확률에도 해당 안 되는 상실의 연속으로 고통받도록 선택되었습니다. 지구상의 어느 누구보다도 욥은 그 답을 물어볼 이유가 있었습니다. 우리는 욥기 전체에서 “왜 나인가?”를 알아내려는 욥의 필사적인 투쟁을 읽습니다.
욥의 이야기는 설명되지 않는 고통과 악의 미스테리에 대응하는 길을 우리에게 보여줍니다. 하나님의 선하심과 자비를 가장 잘 보여주는 예를 들며 고통과 혼란을 묘사함으로써(25장), 우리는 씨 뿌리고 거두는 변함없는 원칙(4:78)에 대해서도 다른 가능성이 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 언젠가 자신의 아들에게 우리 죄를 담당하게 하실 하나님께서 욥과 관련하여 사탄으로 말미암은 혼란에 대한 뒷이야기(1장)와 그 후기(42:7-17)를 보여주심으로써, 우리는 욥의 이야기를 통해 우리에게 보이는 것보다 믿음으로 살아야 할 이유를 찾게 됩니다.
종종 아무 설명 없이 고통을 허락하시는 하나님에 대해 어떻게 생각하십니까? 욥의 이야기는 이것을 이해하는데 어떤 도움을 줍니까?
