“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world!” [John 16:33]
In the New Testament there are three words used that mean trouble. They are tribulation, suffering and affliction. These words differ somewhat, and yet, each of them means trouble of some kind.
Our Lord told His disciples to expect tribulation in this life, teaching them that tribulation belongs to this world; that they could not hope to escape it, and that they would not be carried through this life on flowery beds of comfort.
This is a hard lesson to learn. We can, however, take heart, because God has overcome the world. Through Him, we are victors.
Lord, I rejoice in Your name. Although we will face troubles of many kinds, we can be sure that You will carry us through them because You have already overcome this world. Amen.
