영과 진리로 예배하는 예배자를 찾으시는 하나님 아버지께서, 우리의 예배를 통해 올려 드리는 모든 감사와 찬양과 영광을 기쁘게 받으실 줄 믿습니다.

오늘은 연중시기 열두번째 주일입니다. 지난 주에 하나님의 선하게 창조하신 세계가 죄로 인하여 회파되고 또 인간들이 생각하는 모든 계획이 악할 뿐 임을 보시고 땅 위에 사람 지으셨음을 한탄하사 마음에 근심하시며 홍수로 땅에 혈육있는 모든 생물을 멸하시는 중에도 하나님의 은혜를 입은 노아를 통하여 새로운 시작을 허락하셨음을 보았습니다. 이번 주에는 홍수 이후에도 인간의 부패성으로 인하여 바벨탑 사건과 언어의 혼잡등 사건이 일어난 후 열세대가 지나도록 침묵하시던 하나님께서 믿음의 조상 아브라함을 부르셔서 우상의 땅 갈대아를 떠나 가나안으로 인도하시고 또 그를 믿음의 조상으로 훈련시키고 연단시키는 과정을 보면서 함께 은혜 나누기를 원합니다.
Today is the eleventh Sunday of the Ordinary Time. Last week, we talked about how God’s good-created world was broken because of sin, and all the plans humans thought were evil. However, God allowed a new beginning through Noah. This week, even after the flood, God, who was silent for ten generations after incidents such as the Tower of Babel and congestion of language due to human corruption, called Abraham, the ancestor of faith, to leave Chaldea, the land of idols, and lead him to Canaan. We would like to receive the grace together as we meditate on how God cultivate Abraham.
- 홍수 전에도 인간들의 “마음으로 생각하는 모든 계획이 항상 악할 뿐(창 6:5)”이라고 고백된 성경은 홍수후에도 “사람의 마음이 계획하는 바가 어려서부터 악(창 8:21)”하다고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그렇지만 하나님께서는 이제는 다시는 사람으로 말미암아 땅을 저주하여 모든 생물을 멸하지 않을 것이라 하시며 무지게 언약을 해 주셨습니다. 그 이후에 노아의 자손들이 번성하자 동방으로 옮겨 가다가 시날평지(수메르 문명의 발상지)를 만나 거기 거류하면서 성읍과 탑을 건설하면서 그들의 이름을 내고 또 하늘에 도전하였고, 이에 하나님께서는 언어를 혼잡케 하여 그들을 온 지면에 흩어셨습니다. (창11장 바벨탑 사건)
- Even before the flood, the Bible tells us that “all plans that people think of in their hearts are always evil (Genesis 6:5)” and also even after the flood that “what a man’s heart plans is evil since childhood (Gen 8:21).” Nevertheless, God made a covenant with people, saying that He will no longer curse the earth by human beings and destroy all living creatures. After that, when the descendants of Noah prospered, they moved to the east, met Shinar (the birthplace of Sumerian civilization), and settled there, constructing cities and towers, giving their names against God so that God scattered them all over the earth. (Gen 11, the story of the Tower of Babel)
- 그렇게 노아 이후 10세대 동안 침묵하시던 하나님께서는 그의 창조 세계를 회복 시키시고자, 반역과 우상 숭배의 땅 (수 24:2) 이었던 갈대아 우르 지역 (남부 메소포타미아 지역)에 살면서 우상을 만드는 일을 하였던 데라(수 24:2)의 아들 아브람을 불러 내셔서, 새롭게 역사를 이끌어 가시고자 예정하신 땅, 가나안으로 옮기게 하셨습니다.
- And then God, who had been silent for 10 generations after Noah, called Abraham who lived in Ur of Chaldeans (South Mesopotamia region), a land of rebellion and idolatry (Jos 24:2), to restore his creation and led them to Canaan, the land he had planned to lead history of revelation again.
- 창 15:7 “나는 이 땅을 네게 주어 소유를 삼게 하려고 너를 갈대아인의 우르에서 이끌어 낸 여호와라”는 말씀과, 행 7:2-4 “아브라함이 하란에 있기 전 메소보다미아에 있을 때에 영광의 하나님이 그에게 보여 이르시되 네 고향과 친척을 떠나 내가 네게 보일 땅으로 가라”고 하신 말씀을 바탕으로, 창 11:27-12:1의 내용을 재구성해 보면, 갈대아 우르에서 “너는 네 고향과 친척을 떠나 내가 네게 보여 줄 땅으로 가라”고 하시는 하나님의 부르심을 받은 아브람은 어디까지 가야할 지 모른체, 아버지 ‘데라’와 먼저 죽은 형제 ‘하란’의 아들, 조카 ‘롯’과 함께 길을 떠나, 가나안 땅으로 가고자 (11:31) 마음을 정하고 유프라테스강과 티그리스강을 끼고 있는 4대문명의 발상지중 하나인 ‘초생달 지역’을 따라 북쪽으로 이동하던 중, 초생달 지역의 북단에 위치한 ‘하란’에 이르러, 연로하신 아버지 ‘데라’와 긴 여행 (1000km 도보)의 피로로 인하여 ‘하란’에 머물게 되었고, 그곳에서 꽤 많은 부를 형성하였던 것으로 보입니다. 그리고 마침내 아버지 ‘데라’가 돌아가시자, 하나님께서는 ‘달 숭배’의 중심지였던 ‘하란’에 주저 앉아 머물러 살기를 원했던 아브람을 다시 불러 내어 또 길을 떠나게 하십니다.
- Based on Gen 15:7 “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to make your possessions” and Acts 7:2-4 “Leave your hometown and your relatives, and go to the land I will see you,” if we reconstruct the story of Gen 11:27-12:1, in Ur of Chaldeans, God said to Abram “Leave your country and your relatives and go to the land that I will show you.” Without knowing how far to go, Abram left the road with his father, Terah, and his nephew, Lot, the son of Haran, the brother who died first. Abram made up his mind to go to the land of Canaan (11:31), and while moving north along the ‘Crescent Moon Region’, one of the birthplaces of the four major civilizations between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, they reached Haran, located at the northern area of the Crescent Moon region. Due to the fatigue of the elderly father ‘Tera’ and the long trip (around 1000km walk), they stayed in ‘Haran’, and it seems that they earned quite a lot of wealth there. And when his father, Terah, died, God called again Abram to leave from Haran, the center of the worship of the moon and set off again.
- 그렇게 또 다시 “네 고향과 친척과 아버지의 집을 떠나라(창 12:1)”는 말씀을 받은 아브람은 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 다시 가나안(12:5)으로 가고자, 길을 떠났고 마침내 가나안 땅 세겜에 이르자 하나님께서는 아브람에게 나타나 “내가 이 땅을 네 자손에게 주리라”는 약속을 주셨고, 이에 아브람은 마침내 긴 여정을 끝내며 그곳에 제단을 쌓고 하나님께 예배를 올려 드린 후, ‘벧엘’과 ‘아이’사이 샘들이 많은 곳에서 정착을 시작 했습니다.
- But, Abram again obeyed to God who said “Go away from your hometown and relatives and father’s house (Gen 12:1),” and set off on the road to go to Canaan (12:5). When he arrived at Shechem, God appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your descendants.” Abram finally finished his long journey and built an altar there and worshiped God. Then, in the hill country between Bethel and Ai where there were many springs, Abraham settled down.
- 그러나, 이제는 가나안 토착민들의 호전적인 배타성으로 인하여 충돌이 발생하자, 믿음이 약해진 아브람은 이를 피해 점점 남하하게 되었고 마침내 연중 강우량이 200mm 이하가 되는 매우 건조한 지역인 네게브 사막의 최북단 지역에 이르러 그곳에 거류하게 되었는데, 그나마 가나안 땅에 기근이 들자, 다시 이집트까지 내려가게 되었습니다.
- However, as the conflict occurred due to the belligerent exclusivity of the indigenous Canaanites, Abram, whose faith was weakened, gradually moved southward to avoid it. However, when a famine broke out in the land of Canaan, they went down to Egypt.
- 그리고는 이집트 사람들이 사래의 아름다움에 반해 자기를 죽일까 염려하여, 사래가 자기의 아내라는 사실을 숨기고 누이(실제 사래는 아브람의 사촌 누이)라고만 하였고, 바로가 사래의 아름다움을 보고 궁으로 데려가 아내를 삼고자 하는 지경에 이르자, 하나님의 개입으로 아내 사래를 되찾게 되었을 뿐 만 아니라, 재물까지 얻어, 다시 가나안 땅으로 돌아올 수 있게 되었습니다.
- Then, fearing that the Egyptians would fall for Sarai’s beauty and kill him, he hid the fact that Sarai was his wife and called her a sister (actually Sarai was Abram’s cousin sister). But, God intervened to save Sarah and Abraham and return to the land of Canaan.
- 이에서 보는 바와 같이, 애굽으로 내려간 사건은 아브람의 신앙여정에 있어 대 반전의 전환점이 되어, 그 이후 하나님께서는 아브람과 횃불 언약 (15장)과 할례 언약 (17장)을 맺어 주심으로 믿음을 성장시켜주시고, 닫힌 태를 여셔서 아들 ‘이삭’을 주시고 마침내 독자 이삭까지 하나님께 바치라는 테스트를 통과하여 믿음의 조상으로 세워 주셨습니다.
- The event that Abraham went down to Egypt became a turning point in Abram’s journey of faith. After that, God made the torch covenant (Chapter 15) and the circumcision covenant (Chapter 17) with Abram to cultivate his faith. And He gave him his son Isaac by opening the closed womb, and finally when he passed the test to dedicate his reader Isaac to God, God established him as the ancestor of faith.
- 이렇게 하나님께서는 12장 1-3절에서 아브라함을 축복해 주시겠다는 약속, 즉, 큰 민족, 창대한 이름, 그리고 복의 근원이 되게 해 주시겠다고 말씀 하셨는데, 결국 이 약속의 말씀을 받아 누릴 수 있도록 아브라함의 믿음을 키워 주신 것이었습니다.
- In this way, as God said in 12:1-3 that he would bless Abraham; making him a great nation, making his name great, and making him a source of blessing, God cultivated the faith of Abraham to receive the blessings from God.
- 그렇습니다. 하나님은 축복 하시겠다는 약속을 주시되, 또 그 축복을 감당할 수 있도록 우리를 훈련하시고 연단하시는 분이십니다. 기도하옵기는, 사랑하는 우리 자녀들 모두가 하나님의 약속의 자녀로 앞으로 주실 큰 축복에 걸맞는 아이들로 자라날 수 있도록 말씀과 믿음과 성령으로 인도해 주시기를 소망할 때에, 모든 가정과 교회에도 동일한 은혜와 축복이 함께 하시기를 기도합니다.
- That’s right. God gives us a promise to bless, but He is the one who trains and refines us to endure and receive those blessings. I pray that the same grace and blessings will be given to all homes and churches as we hope to lead all of our beloved children with the Word, faith, and the Holy Spirit so that they will grow up to be children of God’s promises and worthy of the great blessings that will be given in the future.

Q1 What was Abram’s heart like when God told Abram to leave his hometown where he lived comfortably and abundantly and go to an unknown place? If you were Abram, how would you respond to God’s word to leave? 하나님께서 아브람에게 편안하고 풍요하게 살고 있던 고향을 떠나 알 수 없는 곳으로 가라고 했을 때 아브람의 마음을 어땠을까요? 만약 여러분이 아브람이라면 떠나라는 하나님의 말씀에 어떻게 반응하실건가요?

Q2: Whenever we want to accomplish something, it will be natural for us to strive to develop our ability to do it and to have a character worthy of it. What dreams do you guys have? 하나님께서는 우리에게 약속을 주실 뿐 만 아니라 그 약속을 우리들의 꿈을 통하셔 이루어 주시며, 그러한 과정에서 우리가 그 약속을 받아 누릴 수 있도록 하나님께서는 우리의 믿음을 먼저 연단시켜 주십니다. 기도하기는 그 하나님의 축복의 자리, 그 길에 우리 모든 자녀들과 가정과 교회가 함께 있을 수 있기를 기도합니다.

God not only gives us promises, but also fulfills those promises through our dreams. God tests and cultivates our faith so that we can receive and enjoy the promises. I pray that all of our children, families, and churches can be together on this way.
