영과 진리로 예배하는 예배자를 찾으시는 하나님 아버지께서, 우리의 예배를 통해 올려 드리는 모든 감사와 찬양과 영광을 기쁘게 받으실 줄 믿습니다.

The praise ad honor and glory be to our Heavenly Father who seeks worshipers who worship with spirit and truth.

오늘은 연중시기 열세번째 주일입니다. 지난 주 하나님께서 우상의 땅 갈대아 우르에서 아브람을 부르셔서 믿음의 조상 아브라함으로 세우시는 과정을 보았는데, 이번 주에는 야곱의 이야기를 통해 하나님께서 아브라함에게 약속하신 축복의 말씀을 그의 후손들에게 어떻게 이루어가시는지 보면서 함께 은혜 나누기를 원합니다.

Today is the thirteenth Sunday of the ordinary time of the Church calendar. Last week, we saw how God called Abram from Ur, the land of idols and established him as Abraham, the father of faith. This week, we would like to share the grace that God keeps His promise to Abraham’s descendants through Jacob’s story.

• 우상의 땅 갈대아 우르에서 아브람을 불러 내셔서 하나님의 백성으로 세우시고자 하신 뜻은 이제 이삭을 지나 야곱의 대에 이르렀습니다. 이삭의 아내 ‘리브가’도 임신하지 못하더니 (창 25:21) 이삭의 간구를 들으시고 마침내 쌍둥이 아들을 낳게 하셨는데, 첫째는 붉고 털이 많아 ‘에서’라 불렀고 둘째는 태어나면서 에서의 발꿈치를 잡고 나왔다 하여 ‘발꿈치를 잡았다’ 혹은 ‘속이다’라는 뜻을 가진 ‘야곱’이라고 불렀습니다.
• The promise to Abraham through whom God establish His people, passed over to the generation of Jacob through Isaac. Isaac’s wife, Rebekah, was also unable to conceive (Gen 25:21). Hearing Isaac’s petition, God finally gave twin sons. The first son was named Esau because of his red face and hairy body. His second son came out holding Esau’s heel at birth, so he was named ‘Jacob’, which means ‘grasp the heel’ or ‘to deceive’.
• 그런데, 야곱은 그 이름 때문인지 어릴 때 부터, 들에서 돌아와 배가 고픈 ‘에서’로 부터 ‘팥죽’으로 장자의 명분을 빼았더니, 마침내 아버지 이삭이 나이 많아 형 ‘에서’를 축복 하고자 할 때에, 어머니 ‘리브가’와 함께 아버지를 속이고 에서가 받을 축복을 가로챔 으로, 에서의 분노를 사, 멀리 메소보타미아 지역의 북쪽에 있는 밧단아람 (아브람이 잠시 머물렀던 하란의 다른 이름)에 있는 외삼촌 ‘라반’의 집으로 피신하게 되었습니다.
• But, perhaps because of that name, when Esau came back from the field with hunger, Jacob stole the birthright form Esau with ‘red bean porridge’. And also when his father Isaac was old and wanted to bless his brother Esau, he and his mother, Rebekah, deceived his father and intercepted the blessings Esau would receive. So, he took refuge in the house of his uncle Laban in Paddan Aram (another name for Haran where Abram stayed for a while).
• 그리고, 야곱보다 더 교활한 외삼촌 ‘라반’의 집에서 온갖 고생을 하다, 20년(창31:38) 만에 하나님의 은혜로, 아내들과 이들에게서 난 열한명의 아들들 (그때는 아직 벤냐민이 나기 전, 창35:16)과 하나님께서 축복으로 이루어주신 모든 가축들과 노비들을 데리고, “네 조상의 땅 네 족속에게로 돌아가라 내가 너와 함께 있으리라”는 하나님의 명령(창 31:3)을 쫓아 가나안 땅으로 다시 돌아오게 되었고, 하나님께서는 야곱을 격려하고자 하나님의 군대 ‘마하나임’이 그와 함께 하고 있음을 보여 주셨습니다.
• And, he suffered all kinds of hardships in the house of his maternal uncle ‘Laban’, who is more cunning than Jacob. After 20 years (Gen 31:38), God said to Jacob, “Go back to your ancestors’ land and to your tribes and I will be with you (Gen 31:3),” he set out from Harran with all he had by the grace of God; his four wives and  their eleven sons (before Benjamin was born, Gen. 35:16), and all the livestock and slaves that God blessed, and came back to the land of Canaan, while God encouraged Jacob by showing that God’s army, Mahanaim, was with him.
• 그런데, 형 ‘에서’의 보복이 두려웠던 야곱은 세일 땅 에돔에 있는 형에게 사자를 보내어 자기가 돌아오고 있음을 알렸는데, ‘에서’가 사백명을 거느리고 ‘야곱’을 만나러 온다는 말을 듣고는 두려움이 밀려 오자 한편으로는 하나님의 도우심을 간구하면서도, 동시에 인간적인 계획을 세우기 시작합니다. 먼저 자기가 소유한 가축들과 노비들을 두 떼로 나누어 ‘에서’가 칠 경우를 대비하면서, 또 한편으로는 ‘에서’에게 줄 예물을 준비하여, 아홉 떼로 나누어 거리를 두어 앞에 세우고, ‘에서’의 감정을 풀고자 하였습니다.
• By the way, Jacob, who was afraid of Esau, sent a messenger to him in Edom in the land of Seir to inform him that he was returning. The messengers reported that Esau was coming to meet Jacob with four hundred people. Hearing that news, Jacob trembled in fear. So on the one hand, he prayed for God’s help, but at the same time he began to make his own tricks. First, dividing his own cattle and slaves into two groups in order to save at least one in case of Esau’s attack. On the other hand, he prepared a gift for Esau, divided into nine groups, and set a distance in front of him to release Esau’s feelings.
• 그런데, 마침내 얍복강 가에 이르자, 자기의 아내들과 자식들 그리고 자기의 모든 소유도 먼저 강을 건너가게 한 후에, 자기는 얍복강을 건너지 않고, 여차하면 도망갈 궁리를 하며 밤을 세우게 되었습니다. 그러나 그 밤에, 하나님께서는 두려움에 떨고 있는 ‘야곱’을 찾아와 ‘날이 새도록 야곱과 씨름하’셨는데, 야곱의 마음을 돌이키게 할 수 없으시자, 그의 허벅지 관절을 쳐서 절음발이가 되게 하셨습니다. 그러자 이제 절음발이가 되어 더 이상 도망도 칠 수 없는 지경에 이르게 된 야곱은 마침내 하나님께 매달리기 시작했고, 하나님께서는 ‘속이는 자’라는 뜻을 가진 ‘야곱’의 이름을 ‘하나님과 겨루어 이긴 자’라는 뜻의 ‘이스라엘’로 바꾸어 주시며, 야곱을 축복해 주셨습니다.
• When he finally came to the Jabbok River, he let his wives, children, and all his possessions cross the river first, but he did not cross the Jabbok River and stayed there alone, just in case in order to run away. But that night, God came to ‘Jacob,’ who was trembling in fear, to ‘wrestled with Jacob all night long.’ When Jacob did not change his heart back, He struck his thigh joint and made him limp. Then Jacob became a desperate person and could no longer escape, he then finally began to cling to God. Then, God changed his name to ‘Israel’ that means ‘the one who competed with God and overcome.’
• 이 얍복강변의 하루밤은 야곱의 인생에 있어 큰 전환점이 되었습니다. 이제까지는 아홉떼의 가축떼를 앞세우고 심지어 자식들과 아내들 마저 자기 앞에 두고 여차하면 도망갈 궁리나 했던 비겁하고 두려움에 떨던 ‘야곱’이 마침내 날이 밝자 이제 가족들의 맨 앞으로 나가 (창33:3) ‘에서’를 맞아 일곱번 몸을 굽혀 절하며 은혜를 구하였고, “형님의 얼굴을 뵈온즉 하나님의 얼굴을 본 것 같다”고 말 하였습니다.
• This night in the bank of the Jabbok River marked a turning point in Jacob’s life. Cowardly and terrified Jacob, who had been thinking about running away from Esau, forsaking his wives and children, went out to the front of his family at the beginning of the day (Gen 33:3 ) and bowed down seven times for asking grace and saying “When I see my brother’s face, I felt like I have seen the face of God.”
• 그러나 아직도 형 ‘에서’를 완전히 믿지 못했던 ‘야곱’은 에돔의 세일땅으로 함께 돌아 가자던 ‘에서’를 따 돌리고, 방향을 바꾸어 요단을 건너 가나안으로 들어 오지만, “네 조상의 땅(아브라함과 이삭이 머물던 땅 헤브론)으로 돌아가라(창 31:3)”고 하셨던 하나님의 명령을 어기고 형 ‘에서’에게서 먼 ‘세겜’ 땅에 정착하게 되었고, 불행하게도 딸 ‘디나’가 그 땅의 추장 세겜에게 강간당하는 사건이 벌어졌고, 죄를 뉘우치고 ‘디나’와 결혼하고 화평하기를 원하는 세겜 족속들을 속이고, 야곱의 아들들이 세겜성의 모든 남자를 죽이고 가축과 재물들과 자녀들과 아내들을 노략하는 죄를 저지르게 되었습니다.
• However, ‘Jacob’, who still did not fully believe in his elder brother ‘Esau’, turned away from ‘Esau’, who wanted to return together to the land of Seir in Edom, and changed direction to cross the Jordan to enter Canaan. Violating God’s command that “Return to the land of your ancestors (Hebron, the land where Abraham  and Isaac stayed, Gen 31:3)”, he settled in the land of Shechem which was far from Esau. Unfortunately, daughter ‘Dina’ was raped by Shechem, the chief of the land so Jacob’s sons deceived the Shechemites who repented of their sins, married Dinah, and wanted peace and committed sins of killing all the men of the city of Shechem and plundering livestock, goods, children, and wives.
• 그러한 우여곡절에도 불구하고, 하나님의 은혜로 벧엘로 피신하였던 야곱은, 마침내 아버지 ‘이삭’이 거하는 헤브론에 돌아와 아버지의 임종을 지키게 되었고, 하나님께서는 다시 야곱에게 그의 새이름 ‘이스라엘’을 환기시켜 주시며 번성의 약속과 함께 그를 통해 이스라엘 총회와 또한 왕들이 나올 것이라 축복해 주셨습니다.
• Despite such twists and turns, Jacob, who escaped to Bethel by God’s grace, finally returned to Hebron, where his father ‘Isaac’ resides, to keep his father’s death and God reminded again his new name ‘Israel’ and gave him the promise of prosperity and blessed him that through him the General Assembly of Israel and kings will come.
• 이렇게 오늘 야곱의 이야기를 통하여, 하나님의 축복의 약속을 받았음에도 불구하고 하나님을 의지하기 보다, 끝임없이 인간적인 술수를 벌여 왔던 ‘야곱’이 드디어 환도뼈가 탈골되어 더 이상 자기의 힘을 의지할 수 없게 되었을 때, 마침내 하나님을 붙들기 시작했고, 고향을 떠나 온가족이 애굽땅으로 내려가는 ‘험악한 인생 (창47:9’을 보냈지만, 그러나 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루시는 하나님께서 이국 땅, 그 애굽 땅에서 400년 동안 이스라엘 백성을 창대케 하시고 마침내 약속하신 가나안 땅으로 불러 들이셔서 (창 15:13-14) 약속의 땅을 정복케 하심으로 하나님의 뜻을 이루시는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다.
• Through the story of Jacob today, rather than relying on God who promised God’s blessing, we can see how Jacob was endlessly engaged in human tactics, finally dislocated the hip socket. But, when he no longer about to rely on his own strength, he finally began to hold on to God. Even with the exile to Egypt (Gen 47:9), God, who works together to achieve good, fulfilled His will by bringing the Israelites to prosperity in the foreign land (Egypt) for 400 years, and finally brought them back into the promised land of Canaan (Gen. 15:13-14) to conquer the promised land.
• 끝없이 인간적 술수를 버리지 못했던 야곱을 마침내 ‘이스라엘’로 변화시키시고 약속의 자녀로 만드신 오늘의 이야기를 보면서, 한편으로는 우리들에게도 소망이 있음을 발견 합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 주시는 축복은 우리가 그 축복을 받을 만하기 때문이 아니라 하나님께서 택하시고 끝까지 함께 하시며 우리를 변화시키셔서 그 축복을 감당할 믿음의 사람으로 변화시켜 주시는 하나님의 열심에 근거함을 알았기 때문입니다. 기도하옵기는, 사랑하는 하나님의 약속의 자녀된 우리 모든 어린이들이 자기가 의지하는 ‘환도뼈’, 즉, 자기의 힘과 능력을 내려놓고, 온전히 하나님을 의지함으로, 하나님께서 주실 축복을 받아 누릴 수 있는 믿음의 자녀들로 성장하여, 하나님 나라에 모두 기둥같이 쓰임 받기를 소망할 때에, 모든 가정과 교회에도 동일한 은혜와 축복이 함께 하시기를 기도합니다.
• Watching the story of today that even Jacob, who could not endlessly abandon his human tactics, was finally transformed into Israel and became a child of promise, we can find hope from us too. Because we knew that the blessings that God gives us are not because we deserve them, but because God chooses and is with us to the end, and transforms us into people of faith who will bear those blessings. I pray that all our children who are children of the promise of God, will be able to receive and enjoy the blessings that God will give by laying down their own strength and power and completely relying on God and used by God as His tool in His kingdom, while we pray the same grace and blessings for all families and our church.

(Through this question, I hope that our children may empathize with Esau’s heart, who lost birthright to his younger brother ‘Jacob’ and also was deprived his father’s blessing by Jacob. When expressing various thoughts, opinions, feelings, and experiences, I hope that you will be able to actively listen and share sympathetic conversations with your children by asking them why you think.)

Q2 What kind of heart would Jacob have been thinking that his older brother Esau was coming to kill him, trembling in fear, sending his family ahead and staying alone behind him and going through the night thinking about running away? 형 ‘에서’가 자기를 죽이러 온다고 생각하고 두려움에 떨며, 가족들을 앞서 보내고 혼자 뒤에 남아 여차하면 도망갈 생각을 하며 밤을 지세고 있었을 야곱은 어떤 마음이었을까요?

(Through this question, I hope that our children can empathize with Jacob’s desperate feelings, while realizing that God was with him in that deep night. We hope that you will be able to have an active listening and empathetic conversation with your children by empathizing with them when expressing their lessons and experiences, and sometimes asking the reason for their thoughts.)

Q3 When God wrestled with him to change Jacob’s heart, Jacob did not change his mind, so God finally broke his circumflex and Jacob became a limp and could no longer escape from his brother Esau. Then he came to God to ask for help. Maybe we also have some kind of ‘circle bone’ that we trust and rely on more than God. I wonder if you can share what yours is. 하나님께서 야곱의 마음을 돌이키시고자 그와 씨름하실 때 꼼짝도 하지 않던 야곱이 마침내 그의 환도뼈가 부러져 절음발이가 되고나니 더 이상 형 ‘에서’로 부터 도망갈 수도 없게 되자, 이제는 오히려 야곱이 하나님을 붙들고 도와주시기를 간구하게 되었습니다. 혹시 우리들에게도 그렇게 자기가 믿고 의지하는 어떤 ‘환도뼈’가 있을 수도 있습니다. 하나님 보다 더 의지하는 것 혹시 그것이 자기에게 있다면 서로 나누어 보는 시간이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
