영과 진리로 예배하는 예배자를 찾으시는 하나님 아버지께서, 우리의 예배를 통해 올려 드리는 모든 감사와 찬양과 영광을 기쁘게 받으실 줄 믿습니다.

오늘은 연중시기 열네번째 주일입니다. 지난 주에는 야곱의 이야기를 통해 하나님께서 아브라함에게 약속하신 축복의 말씀을 그의 후손들에게 어떻게 이루어 가시는지 보았는데, 하나님께서는 ‘속이는 자’라는 뜻을 가진 ‘야곱’을 변화시켜 ‘하나님과 겨루어 이긴 자’라는 뜻을 가진 ‘이스라엘’로 바꾸어 주시고, 그를 축복해 주신 것을 살펴 보았습니다. 이번 주에는 야곱의 아들 ‘요셉’의 이야기를 살펴 보면서 함께 은혜 나누기를 원합니다.
Today is the 14th Sunday of the second ordinary time. Last week, through the story of Jacob, we saw how God fulfills His promise of blessing to Abraham to his descendants that God changed Jacob’s name to ‘Israel,’ which has meaning of ‘the one who competed with God and overcome,’ to bless him. This week, we would like to meditate on the story of ‘Joseph’ and ‘Judah’ and share the grace together.
- 이제 하나님의 역사는 야곱에게서 아들 요셉으로 옮겨가면서 구원을 향한 역사로 바뀌어져 갑니다. 하나님께서는 세상이 죄악으로 가득함과 어려서 부터 생각하는 모든 계획이 악함을 보시고 노아를 통하여 새로운 시작을 하시기로 작정하시고 홍수로 세상을 심판하셨습니다. 그리고 많은 세월이 흘러 아브라함을 갈대아 우르에서 불러 내셔서 믿음의 조상으로 세우시고 이제 그의 후손들을 통하여 하나님의 백성들을 세우십니다.
- Now God prepared his salvation for His chosen people through the story of Joseph. As we witnessed already, when God saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on earth and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time, the LORD decided to start new beginning through Noah and punished the world with a flood. After ten generations passed, He called Abraham from Ur of the Chaldeans to establish him as the father of faith. Then, through his descendants, He wanted to create His people, the Israelites.
- 아브라함과 사라의 닫힌 태를 열어 약속의 아들 이삭을 주셨던 것처럼, 이삭과 리브가의 닫힌 태도 여서서 에서와 야곱을 주시되 태로 부터 야곱을 택하여 언약을 이어가게 하시고 사람 막대기와 인생의 채찍으로 그를 연단하시는 과정에서 우여곡절 끝에 야곱에게 주신 네명의 아내를 통해 열두아들을 주셔서 이스라엘 열두지파의 조상들이 되게 하셨습니다.
- As God opened the closed womb of Sarah and Abraham and gave a son, Isaac, the son of promise, He also opened the closed womb of Rebekah and gave Esau and Jacob to Isaac and God chose Jacob from the womb to succeed His covenant with Abraham and made him the ancestor of the twelve tribes of Israel.
- 그런데, 야곱의 요셉에 대한 편애로 인하여 자식들간에 불화와 반목이 조성되었고, 결국 창37장에 가서는 야곱의 아들들이 동생 요셉을 미디안 상인들에게 팔아 버리는 죄를 범하고 자기들의 죄를 은폐하기 위하여 요셉이 죽었다고 아버지를 속이게 되었습니다.
- By the wat, because of Jacob’s favoritism toward Joseph, discord and antagonism among children were created. Eventually, in Gen 37, the sons of Jacob committed the sin of selling their younger brother Joseph to Midian merchants, and they deceived their father that Joseph died in order to cover up their sins.
- 그러나 하나님께서는 이런 형제들의 죄를 통해서도 하나님의 역사를 이루어 가셨습니다. 먼저는 꿈을 통해서 하나님의 비전을 받았지만 아직 미숙한 성품과 아버지 야곱의 편애로 인하여 요셉은 형들에게 미움을 받아 애굽왕 바로의 친위대장 보디발에게 노예로 팔려 갔지만 하나님께서 늘 함께 하심으로 그의 범사에 형통케 하셨고 보디발의 아내의 유혹을 물리치는 과정에서 오히려 누명을 쓰고 옥에 갇히는 신세가 되었지만 심지어 옥중에서 조차 하나님께서는 함께 하시며 범사에 형통한 복을 주셨습니다.
- But amazingly, we can see how God has accomplished His work even through the sins of these brothers as well. Even though he was sold to the house of Potiphar, the captain of the guard of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, as a slave, after he received God’s vision through a dream, since he was hated by his brothers because of his immaturity and favoritism of his father Jacob, and he was sold as a slave to Potiphar, but God made him successful in whatever he did while He was always with him. In the process of resisting the temptation of Potiphar’s wife, he was rather framed and imprisoned, but even in prison, God was with him to blessed him in whatever he did again.
- 특별히 하나님께서 요셉에게 꿈을 해석할 수 있는 지혜를 주셨는데, 마침내 바로의 꿈을 해석하여 애굽의 총리가 되어 앞으로 애굽과 온 세상에 닥칠 칠년의 풍년과 칠년의 흉년을 준비하게 되었습니다.
- In particular, God gave Joseph the wisdom to interpret dreams and Joseph finally interpreted Pharaoh’s dream and became the prime minister of Egypt, preparing for the next seven years of abundance and seven years of famine that will come to Egypt and the world.
- 그리고 온 세상에 극심한 흉년이 들었을 때, 애굽 뿐 만 아니라 세상 사람들을 구원하는 하나님의 크신 뜻을 이루게 되었습니다. 그리고 양식을 구하러 온 형들을 만나 극적인 화해를 이루게 되었고 형들은 어릴 때 요셉이 꿈 꾸었던 것처럼 동생 요셉에게 절을 하게 됨으로 요셉의 꿈이 이루어 졌습니다. 그렇습니다. 이런 요셉의 고난과 성공 이야기는 하나님의 작정 안에 있었습니다. 짧게는 세상에 닥칠 환란 (큰 흉년)에 많은 사람들과 야곱의 가족을 구원하기 위하여 요셉을 먼저 이집트로 보내어 준비시킨 것이었을 뿐 만 아니라, 이렇게 야곱 가족의 애굽 이주는 400여년에 걸쳐 거대한 이스라엘 민족이 되게 하시는 하나님의 백성으로 준비되는 시간이 되었습니다.
- When a severe famine hit the whole world, God saved not only Egyptians but also the people of whole earth. And when he met his brothers who came to buy some food, he made a dramatic reconciliation with his brothers who bow down to the ground to Joseph as Joseph already dreamed. Yes, this story of Joseph’s suffering and success was already under the will and plan of Sovereign God. In the near future, His will was to save Jacob’s family and many peoples in the world during the severe famine in the world, but in the far future, through this Jacob family’s migration to Egypt, God raised his people of Israel from Egypt whom God brought back again to Canaan after 400 years later as God prophesied.
- 그리고 한가지 우리가 눈여겨 볼 것은 창세기의 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 이 요셉의 이야기 속에는 900여년후 세워질 남 유다왕국과 북 이스라엘 왕국을 이끌 두 왕가의 태동 이야기가 함께 어우러지고 있다는 사실입니다.
- And one thing we have to see is that in this Joseph’s story, which occupies a large part of Genesis, the stories of the birth of two royal families that will lead the southern kingdom of Judah and northern Israel, which will be established 900 years later, are interwoven together.
- 야곱의 첫째 부인 레아의 4남이었던 유다는 장남인 르우벤의 부족함이 점점 드러남과 동시에 둘째 세째 아들 시므온과 레위가 여동생 디나의 일로 큰 죄를 짓게 됨으로 믿음의 조상의 반열에서 점점 멀어져 나가는 한편, 동생을 죽이겠다고 형제들이 계획을 세울 때, 유다는 요셉을 애굽에 팔도록 설득하는 것으로 부터 시작하여, 막내 베냐민이 위험에 처했을 때 베냐민을 대신하는 등 점점 더 형제들 사이에서 리더쉽을 보임으로 남 유다 왕국의 선조가 되었고 마침내 예수 그리스도의 혈통이 되었습니다. 한편으로 예수님의 성품을 예표하는 요셉은 그의 둘째 아들 에브라임이 북 이스라엘 왕가의 선조가 되었는데, 얽히고 설킨 가정사를 통해서 하나님의 구원사를 이루어 가셨습니다.
- I mean, Judas, the fourth son of Jacob’s first wife, Leah, gradually was risen as the progenitor of southern kingdom of Judah, while the firstborn of Jacob, Reuben, due to his weak leadership, and the second and third sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi with their sin due to the affairs of their younger sister Dinah, were gradually disqualified as the ranks of the ancestors of faith. When his brothers made plans to kill their younger brother, Joseph, Judas persuaded his brothers to sell Joseph to Egypt, and also gradually took the leadership on his brothers, and also took a responsibility to replace Benjamin, when he was in danger so that Judah became not only the progenitor of the southern kingdom of Judah, but also the lineage of Jesus Christ. On the other hand, Joseph showed typology of Jesus and also as the blessings of God, his second son, Ephraim became the progenitor of the northern Israeli royal family. Even through this entangled complicated family history, God accomplished His work of salvation.
- 이렇게 오늘 요셉과 유다의 이야기를 통하여, 구원사와 세계사를 이끌어 가시는 하나님의 주권과 섭리를 우리는 볼 수 있습니다. 비록 우리 유한한 인간의 눈에는 우연히 일어난 것 같은 일들도 실은 무한하신 하나님의 예정과 계획 안에서 그 뜻을 이루어 가시기에, 우리는 하나님 아버지를 “모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루시는 (롬 8:28)” 역사의 주권자이심을 고백하는 것입니다. 기도하옵기는 창세 전에 택정함을 입어 하나님의 백성이 되어 ‘하나님의 큰 일’에 부르심을 받아 하나님의 역사에 참여하여 Witness 할 수 있는 특권을 부여 받은 우리 자녀들과 가정들과 교회가 하나님 기뻐하시는 믿음 (히11:6)으로 연단받아 하나님께서 주시는 축복을 누릴 뿐 만 아니라 하나님께 영광 올려드리는 우리 모두가 되기를 기도합니다.
- Through the story of Joseph and Judas, we can see God’s sovereignty and providential care through which God leads the history of salvation and the world history. Even though things that happened seems to happen by chance in the eyes of our finite human beings, actually Sovereign God maintains and holds and reigns His world through His predestination and work by infinite God, as our Heavenly Father “work together to do good (Rom 8:28),” as Sovereign God. I pray that our children, their families, and churches who were elected before the creation of the world and were called to the ‘great work of God’ and were given the privilege to participate in God’s work and to witness, glorify God in addition to enjoy the blessings of God, after their faith may be cultivated.

In Genesis chapters 42 to 45, Joseph cried out loud three times (Gen 42:24, 43:30, 45:2).because of his brothers to grieve and also even after reconciliation with his brothers he cried again, since his brothers doubted his sincere forgiveness, he wept again (Gen 50:17). How was Joseph’s heart who cried so loudly? 창세기 42장에서 45장을 보면 요셉이 형들을 만나는 과정에서 형들과의 애증으로 큰 소리로 세번이나 울었고 (창42:24, 43:30, 45:2) 그 이 후에도 자기의 진심어린 용서를 받아들여 주지 않는 형들 때문에 또 울었다(창50:17) 고 말하고 있습니다. 여러분 이렇게 크게 울었던 요셉의 마음은 어땠을까요?

We hope that you will be able to enjoy a conversation with your children by empathizing with them when expressing various thoughts, opinions, feelings and experiences, and sometimes asking the reason for their thoughts.)
Q2 When there happened something unfair and difficult sometimes, I wonder what you did? 여러분들도 때때로 억울하고 힘든 일이 있을 때 어떻게 하나요?
(이 질문을 통하여, 우리 자녀들이 자기의 감정도 이해하고 공감해 줄 수 있기를 소망합니다. 우리는 감정을 가진 인간으로 창조 되었습니다. 그래서 감정에는 좋은 것 나쁜 것이 있는 것이 아니라 감정은 Neutral 한 것인데, 다만 그것을 어떻게 처리하는가가 아주 중요합니다. 슬픔도 기쁨도 화도 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 감정이기에 그러한 감정이 생길 때, 그것을 이해하고 또 그 감정에 공감해 주며, 우리의 ‘이성’에게 자기의 감정 상태를 전달함으로 그 감정을 건전하게 제어하고 다룰 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 따라서, 어떤 감정이 느껴지면, 그 감정을 나쁜 것으로 치부하여 내면화시킴으로 정신 질환이 되지 않도록 하여야 하며, 혹은 외적으로 표출하여 인간 관계를 파괴하는 일이 없도록 할 때에, 건강한 정서적 삶을 누릴 수 있을 줄 믿습니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시면서, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)
(Through this question, we hope that our children will be able to understand and empathize with their feelings. We are created as emotional beings. So, all emotions are neutral and there are no good or bad emotions so that how to deal with them is very important. Sadness, joy, and anger are just emotions that God created in us to react to the situation. So when such emotions arise, we should try to understand our emotions and empathize with them so that we can control and deal with them by communicating our emotional states to our ‘reason’. When an emotion is felt, if we internalize and push it down, it can become mental illness and if we express them out, it can destroy our relationships. When we treat our emotion well by identifying and empathizing them, I believe we can enjoy a healthy emotional life. I hope that you may enjoy a conversation with your children by empathizing with them when expressing various thoughts, opinions, feelings and experiences, and sometimes asking the reason for their thoughts.)
Q3 We cannot understand all of God’s will, plans, and works. However, God always guards and protects His children like eyes. What comfort does knowing that fact give you? 여러분 우리는 하나님의 뜻과 계획과 일하심을 다 이해할 수 없습니다. 그러나 언제나 하나님께서는 그분의 자녀들을 눈동자처럼 지키시고 보호하신답니다. 그 사실을 안다는 것이 어떤 위로를 주는가요?

Although human beings cannot know and understand everything, God’s sovereignty and providential care beyond our freedom will surely fulfill His will.
