“When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession.” [EPHESIANS 1:13–14]
God’s love and acceptance of us is constant and never changes. How do we come to know of this love? The Holy Spirit is the agent that makes it known to us. The Holy Spirit of God enters into us and whispers his love. Flesh and blood, logic and reason will never reveal God’s love to us. It is beyond our understanding; it must be revealed.
“The outpouring of the Holy Spirit is really the outpouring of his love,” wrote French monk Abbé de Tourville.14 The Holy Spirit is the continuation of the love of God seen in Jesus. The love between the Father and the Son is communicated to us through the Holy Spirit. We are temples in whom the Spirit of God dwells. God is love; love itself dwells within us. That is why John said we know we are born of God when we are able to love.
It is the voice of the Spirit within us that reminds us that we are the Beloved. If we listen closely, we will hear these words of love.
When do you find yourself doubting God’s love for you? In those moments call upon the Holy Spirit, who reminds us of that love.
Lord, give me ears to hear you whisper your love to me. Amen. [Faith that Matters]
