10 Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God.

Sarah has a rare condition that causes her joints to dislocate, making her reliant on an electric wheelchair to get around. On her way to a meeting recently, Sarah rode her wheelchair to the train station but found the elevator broken. Again. With no way of getting to the platform, she was told to take a taxi to another station forty minutes away. The taxi was called but never arrived. Sarah gave up and went home.
Unfortunately, this is a regular occurrence for Sarah. Broken elevators stop her from boarding trains, forgotten ramps leave her unable to get off them. Sometimes Sarah is treated as a nuisance by railway staff for needing assistance. She’s often close to tears.
Out of the many biblical laws governing human relationships, “love your neighbor as yourself” is key (Leviticus 19:18; Romans 13:8–10). And while this love stops us from lying, stealing, and abusing others (Leviticus 19:11, 14), it also changes how we work. Employees must be treated fairly (v. 13), and we should all be generous to the poor (vv. 9–10). In Sarah’s case, those who fix elevators and drag out ramps aren’t doing inconsequential tasks but offering important service to others.
If we treat work as just a means to a wage or other personal benefit, we will soon treat others as annoyances. But if we treat our jobs as opportunities to love, then the most everyday task becomes a holy enterprise.—Sheridan Voysey

사라는 관절이 탈구되는 희귀병에 걸려 전기 휠체어에 의지해 돌아다닙니다. 사라는 얼마 전 회의에 참석하려고 휠체어를 타고 기차역에 갔으나 엘리베이터가 또 고장나 있었습니다. 승강장까지 갈 수 있는 방법이 없으니 40분 정도 떨어진 다른 역까지 택시를 타라고 누가 일러주었습니다. 택시를 불렀지만 끝내 오지 않았습니다. 결국 사라는 포기하고 집으로 돌아갔습니다.
불행히도 이런 일은 사라에게 자주 일어납니다. 엘리베이터가 고장이 나서 기차를 타지 못하거나, 승강판을 내려주지 않아 열차에서 내리지 못하기도 합니다. 때때로 철도 직원들은 도움이 필요한 사라를 귀찮은 존재로 취급합니다. 그래서 종종 눈물이 날 지경입니다.
인간관계를 가르치는 많은 성경 계명 중에서 가장 핵심적인 것은 “네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라”입니다(레위기 19:18; 로마서 13:8-10). 이런 사랑은 우리가 거짓말하거나, 도둑질하거나, 남을 학대하는 것을 막을 뿐만 아니라(레위기 19:11, 14) 우리가 일하는 방식도 바꿔줍니다. 직원들은 공평하게 대우받아야 하며(13절), 우리는 모두 가난한 사람들에게 관대해야 합니다(9-10절). 사라의 경우처럼 엘리베이터를 고치거나 승강판을 내려주는 사람들은 하찮은 일을 하는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들에게 중요한 섬김을 하고 있는 것입니다.
자신의 직업을 단지 돈을 벌거나 다른 개인적인 이익을 위한 수단으로만 여긴다면, 우리는 곧 다른 사람들을 귀찮은 대상으로 취급할 것입니다. 그러나 직업을 누군가 사랑할 수 있는 기회로 여긴다면, 가장 일상적인 일도 거룩한 사업이 될 것입니다.
도움이 필요한 사람들을 우리가 왜 귀찮게 여긴다고 생각합니까? 오늘 우리의 일을 어떻게 사랑을 실천하는 기회로 삼을 수 있을까요?
하나님 아버지, 직업이 주님에게는 결코 단순한 직업이 아니라 우리가 주님을 사랑하고 다른 사람들을 섬길 수 있는 기회입니다. 오늘 제 일을 다른 사람들을 이롭게 하는 기회로 삼도록 도와주소서.
