영과 진리로 예배하는 예배자를 찾으시는 하나님 아버지께서, 우리의 예배를 통해 올려 드리는 모든 감사와 찬양과 영광을 기쁘게 받으실 줄 믿습니다.

오늘은 연중시기 스무번째 주일입니다. 지난 주에는 우리가 약속의 땅에서 살아가면서, 주님께 겸손과 온유를 배우면 쉼을 얻을 수 있을 뿐 만 아니라, 주님의 인도하심을 따라 주님께서 주시는 쉽고 가벼운 멍에를 함께 메고 걸어갈 때에 하나님께 영광 돌리는 삶을 살 수 있다고 배웠습니다. 그런데, 살다보면 아주 드물지만 감당하기조차 어려운 큰 어려움이 우리의 삶을 뒤흔드는 경험을 하게 되기도 합니다. 오늘은 인생의 고난을 다룬 욥기를 읽으면서 함께 고민해 보고 또 은혜 나누기를 원합니다.
Today is the 20th Sunday of the Ordinary Time. Last week, we learned that as we learn humility and meekness from the Lord while we live in the promised land, we will not only get rest, but also walk with the easy and light yoke that the Lord gives us, while glorifying God. By the way, in our spiritual journey with Jesus, we can experience a crisis which is very difficult to deal with. Today, while reading the book of Job, which deals with the sufferings of life, we would like to learn how to cope with those crisis by meditating on it.
- 욥기는 족장시대 동방 (Uz)에 살던 의인 욥(일부 학자는 “욥”은 “너희 아버지가 어디계신가?” 라는 뜻을 가지고 있다고 하기도 함)이 겪는 고난과 그 과정에서 고난에 대한 네 친구들과의 변론 그리고 마지막 폭풍 속에 나타나신 하나님의 말씀들이 서술되어 있는데, 인간의 영원한 숙제인 고난에 대한 질문, 특히 착하게 사는 사람들이 왜 고난을 받는가, 그리고 과연 하나님은 의로우신가에 질문을 그 중심 주제로 하여, 선한 사람은 복받고 악한 사람은 벌을 받는다는 인과 응보론과 고난에 대한 신의 정의 문제(신정론 Theodicy라고 함)를 다루고 있는데, 욥의 고통과 그의 인내에 대한 교훈과 더불어 인간 실존으로서의 고통의 문제에 대한 통찰을 얻을 수 있는 성경책입니다.
- The book of Job is a story about the suffering of the righteous Job (some scholars say that “Job” means “Where is your father?”) who lived in the east (Uz) in the patriarchal era, the arguments with four friends about the cause of suffering and what he has to do, and also the words of God to Job, appearing in the storm. The suffering, which is the long-time question of human being, is the main theme of Job, questioning why those who seem to live good, suffer, and whether God is really righteous on that. It deals with God’s justice for human suffering (called Theodicy), and provided the insight into the suffering as a human existence, through Job’s suffering and his patience.
- 욥기에서는 의인이었던 욥에게 찾아온 고난은 사탄의 고소 즉, 욥의 순종은 하나님의 축복 때문이었다는 사탄의 고발에 의한 것이었고 하나님의 허락 하에 이루어진 것(욥 1:12; 2:6)이라고 이야기하고 있으며, 욥은 그의 모든 자녀들과 재산을 잃고 고통스런 병에 걸려 신음하면서도 “내가 모태에서 알몸으로 나왔사온즉 또한 알몸이 그리로 돌아가올지라 주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다”고 하며 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님께 원망하지도 않았다고 전하고 있습니다. (욥 1:21)
- In the book of Job, it is said that the suffering that came to Job, who was a righteous man, was due to Satan’s accusation that Job’s obedience was due to God’s blessing, and if God stop blessings to Job, Job will betray God, so that God permitted Satan to do harm to Job (Job 1:12; 2:6). But, when Job lost all his children and possessions, even with groaning with a painful illness, Job did not sin, saying, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” (Job 1:21)
- 그리고 욥이 사람들 모르게 지은 죄 때문에 이런 고통이 왔으니 하나님 앞에 회개하라(4:7; 5:6; 8:5-6; 11:14; 15:16; 18:21; 22:4-5; 25:4)는 세 친구와의 논쟁에서, 욥은 자신은 하나님의 말씀을 거역한 적이 없고(6:10), 죄가 없지만(9:20), 하나님께서 자기를 정죄하시고(9:20), 폭풍으로 치시며 까닭없이 그의 상처를 깊게 하셨고(9:17), 심지어 내면은 비록 완전하지 못하지만 범죄하지는 않았다(10:15)고 항변하면서, 하나님께 자기가 무슨 죄를 지었는지 알게 해달라(10:2)하며, 하나님께서 그를 진흙가운데 던지셨고 티끌과 재 같게 하셨다(30:19)고 하고 심지어 하나님보다 자기 의롭다고 하며 마음 깊은 곳에 있는 원망을 드러 내었습니다.
- And then when three friends came to advise that since this suffering came from Job’s hidden sin, Job should repent before God (4:7; 5:6; 8:5-6; 11:14; 15:16; 18:21; 22:4-) 5; 25:4), Job argued that he himself never rebelled against God’s word (6:10), was innocent (9:20), rather God condemned him (9: 20), struck with a storm and deepened his wounds for no reason (9:17), and defended that he did not sin even though he was not perfect in heart(10:15). Then he asked God to know what kind of sin he has committed (10:2), and he complaint that God threw him in the mud and made him like dust and ashes (30:19), even saying that he was more righteous than God, and he revealed resentful deep in his heart.
- 욥의 세 친구를 먼저 책망한 엘리후는 욥이 자기 스스로를 의인으로 여기고(32:1), 하나님보다 자기가 의롭다(32:2)고 하자, 엘리후가 “이렇게 말하는 것이 의롭지 못하다(33:12)”고 말하며 차라리 하나님께 기도하여, 은혜를 베푸시고 공의를 회복시켜 달라(33:26)고 하라고 권면하면서, 하나님은 권능이 지극히 크시고 정의나 공의를 굽게 하지 않으심으로(37:23), 하나님을 경외하라(37:24)고 하였습니다.
- So, Elihu jumped into their conversation that first of all, he rebuked Job’s three friends, and then even said to Job that it is not right that Job regarded himself as righteous (32:1) and that he was more righteous than God (32:2) and urged him rather to pray to God to show him grace and restore justice (33:26), and also because God is so great in power and does not break justice (37:23 ), Job should fear God (37:24).
- 그러자 마침내 하나님께서 폭풍 가운데 나타나셔서 “너는 대장부처럼 허리를 묶고 내가 네게 묻는 것을 대답할지어다” 하시며, 욥의 고통에 대한 이유에 대해서는 말씀하시지 않으시고, 인간인 욥이 도저히 이해할 수 없는 하나님의 크신 일들에 대해 욥에게 물으셨고 (38~39장), 마침내 욥은 “보소서 나는 비천하오니 무엇이라 주께 대답하리이까 손으로 내 입을 가릴 뿐이로소이다 내가 한 번 말하였사온즉 다시는 더 대답하지 아니하겠나이다(40:4-5)”고 고백하였고, “나는 깨닫지도 못한 일을 말하였고 스스로 알 수도 없고 헤아리기도 어려운 일을 말하였나이다(42:3)”고 하며 ”내가 주께 대하여 귀로 듣기만 하였사오나 이제는 눈으로 주를 뵈옵나이다 그러므로 내가 스스로 거두어들이고 티끌과 재 가운데에서 회개하나이다”고 하며 하나님께 회개를 하였습니다. 그러자 하나님께서는 그의 친구들 앞에서 욥의 공의를 회복시켜 주시고(42:7-8) 그에게 갑절의 자녀들과 재물로 축복해 주셨습니다(42:12-13).
- Then, finally God appeared in the storm and said, “Tie your waist like a captain, and answer my questions.” While God did not say the reason for Job’s suffering, He asked Job about great things (chapters 38-39) which Job cannot understand at all. And then Job said, “Behold, I am lowly, what shall I answer to the Lord? (40:4-5)” and confessed, “I have spoken things that I did not understand, and I have spoken things that I cannot know and are difficult to figure out (42:3). Now I see you with my own eyes. Therefore, I reap and repent from dust and ashes.” When Job humiliated himself and repented, God restored Job’s justice in front of his friends (42:7-8) and blessed him with double children and riches (42:12-13).
- 이 욥기를 통해서, 우리가 배울 수 있는 것은 먼저 스스로를 의롭게 여겼던 욥이 고난을 통하여 스스로 부족함을 깨닫고 겸손한 하나님의 사람으로 성숙해 가는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 즉 고난을 통하여 마침내 정금같은 믿음(23:10)으로 나올 수 있었던 것입니다.
- Through this book of Job, we can learn that Job, who first considered himself righteous, realized his shortcomings through suffering and by matured into a humble man of God. In other words, through suffering, Job was finally able to come out with pure gold-like faith (23:10).
- 그리고, 비록 욥의 세친구는 인간의 고통은 죄로 부터 온다고 말했고, 욥은 고통은 죄로부터 오기도 하지만 하나님께서 그의 백성들을 순결하게 하시기 위한 시련이기도 하다고 말하며 의인은 하나님을 경외하는 가운데 그의 의를 위해 하나님께 항변할 수 있다고 이해 하였으며, 엘리후는 하나님은 때때로 혹은 징계를 위하여, 혹은 땅을 위하여, 혹은 긍휼을 위하여 (37:13) 우리가 헤아릴 수 없는 큰 일을 행하셔서 (37:5), 인간의 영혼을 구덩이에서 이끌어 생명의 빛을 그들에게 비추이게 하시며(33:29-30), 사람이 그의 잘못된 행실을 버리고 또 사람의 교만을 막으심으로(33:17) 결국 하나님을 경외하게 하게 하시기 위하여(37:24), 이러한 일들을 행하시기도 하신다고 말하였지만, 결국 하나님께서는 “왜”라는 질문에는 침묵하신 바, 우리가 이러한 일을 당할 때, 겸손히 우리의 소행과 악행과 교만한 행위를 돌아보아(36:9), 새롭게 결단하고, 곤고한 자의 귀를 열어 깨닫게 하시는 하나님(36:15)께 도움을 구하며(36:13), 하나님께서 하신 일을 기억하고 그분을 높이며 찬송해야 할 줄로 믿습니다(36:24).
- And, even though Job’s three friends said that human suffering comes from sin, Job said that suffering can come from sin, but also God can test and train his people to purify them, so that the righteous can protest God for his justice in the fear of God and Elihu said that God can allow sufferings, sometimes, for discipline, or for the earth, or for mercy (37:13), in order to do great things that we cannot count (37:5) and to bring the soul of the pit out to let the light of life shine upon them (33:29-30), and to lead to the fear of God (37:24) by abandoning his wrongdoing and stopping man’s pride (33:17), while God is silent to the question of “Why”. So, when a crisis comes in our life, we have to reflect our deeds, wrong doings or arrogance (36:9), seeking help from God (36:15), who opens the ears of the needy to understanding (36:13), and then we should, exalt Him, and praise Him(36:24), remembering what God has done.
- 기도하옵기는 사랑하는 우리 어린이들과 가정과 교회가, 오늘날과 같은 위기 상황을 맞아, 스스로 돌아보아 새로운 믿음과 삶으로 나아오는 기회를 삼고, 주님께 긍휼을 구하며, 하나님의 크심을 기억하며, 오히려 찬양으로 나아올 수 있기를 기도합니다.
- I pray that our beloved children, families, and churches face the crisis like today, take this as an opportunity to look back on ourselves and come to a new life of faith so that we may come to praise, while asking the Lord for mercy and remembering the greatness of God.

(Through this question, I hope that our children will be able to empathize with Job’s heart. And I hope that our children may know that premature advice can make the heart of the grieving one even more painful. We hope that you will be able to have an active listening and empathetic conversation with your children by empathizing with them when expressing their feelings and experiences, sometimes asking the reason for their thoughts.)
Q2 Through this crisis of Covid-19, we hope to see whether we have anything to put down or to act and proceed with new way of doing. (Through this question, I hope that it will be a time to think about how our children will come back to God in a transformed attitude or character after this crisis, and also they can share with each other if they have a testimony that God has given them even in the midst of this crisis. In other words, I hope this will give our children a time to think about what kind of testimony you will bring to God who makes you overcome and how/in what transformed character our children will come to God after this crisis. When expressing various thoughts, opinions, feelings, and experiences, you can empathize with them, sometimes asking the reason for their thoughts, and actively listen with your children. I hope you can have a conversation of empathy with them.)
