오늘은 연중시기 스물한번째 주일입니다. 지난 주에는 우리가 약속의 땅에서 살아가다가 보면, 큰 위기가 닥칠 때가 있는데, 그때 우리는 우리의 소행들을 돌아보며, 새롭게 결단하고, 하나님께 도움을 구하며 하나님의 하신 일들을 기억하고 오히려 그분을 높이며 찬송해야 한다고 배웠습니다. 이번 주에는 다윗이 하나님께 택하심을 입고, 골리앗과의 싸움을 승리로 이끌면서 이스라엘의 전면에 등장하는 사건을 통하여, 하나님의 택하심을 입은 사람으로서 우리에게 주어진 오늘 하루 일상의 삶을 어떻게 살아야 할지 한번 생각해 보고 은혜를 나누는 시간이 되기를 소망합니다.
Today is the twenty-first Sunday of the Ordinary Time. Last week, we talked about how we can live in faith when a crisis comes in our lives. When a crisis comes in our lives, we learned to look back on our actions, make new decisions for our attitude and deeds, and ask God for help, remembering what God has done, to exalt Him, and sing praises. This week, I would like to share the grace by thinking about how we should live our daily routine life as a person who is chosen by God, after meditating on how David was chosen by God due to his faithful living of his daily routine life to be appeared in the forefront of the Israel’s history by leading the battle against Goliath to victory.
- 오늘 이야기는 하나님께서 “내 마음에 맞는 사람 (행 13:22)” 이라고 하셨던 다윗에 대한 이야기인데, 이새의 여덟번째 막내 아들로 태어나, 사무엘로부터 사울을 이을 왕으로 기름부음을 받은 후, 다윗 생애 첫 전투인 블레셋과의 전투에서 거인 골리앗을 죽이는 공을 세우고 이스라엘 역사의 전면에 등장하는 이야기입니다.
- Today’s story is about David, whom God said as “a person who fits my heart” (Acts 13:22). After being born as Jesse’s eighth youngest son, and anointed by Samuel as a king to succeed Saul, he appeared in the forefront of Israel’s history after killing the giant Goliath in the battle against the Philistines, the first battle in David’s life.
- 오늘의 본문을 이해하기 위하여 먼저 사무엘상 15장과 16장에 나오는 이야기를 잠시 살펴 보았으면 좋겠습니다. 이스라엘 왕국의 첫 왕 사울은 하나님께 불순종함으로 말미암아 하나님께로 부터 버림을 받았고, 이것을 슬퍼하고 있던 사무엘에게 하나님께서 나타나셔서, 이새의 아들들 중에서 한 명을 다음 왕으로 기름 부어라(16:1)고 하시자, 사무엘은 이새의 집으로 와서, 용모와 키가 출중해 보였던 형들을 기름 붓고자 했지만, 하나님께서는 “나 여호와는 중심을 보”신다고 하시며, 다 물리치셨고, 마지막으로 아버지 이새와 형들의 눈에 보잘 것 없어 보였던, 그래서 사무엘이 방문한 당일에도 들에서 양을 치고 있던 막내 다윗을 불러 들여 기름을 붓게 하셨습니다(16:12). 그리고 기름 부음을 받은 다윗 (약 15세경으로 추정)은 여호와의 영에게 크게 감동되었다(16:13)고 성경은 말하고 있습니다. 하나님의 권능이 임하였던 것입니다.
- In order to understand today’s text, we need to first take a look at the stories in 1 Samuel 15 and 16. After Saul, the first king of the kingdom of Israel, was rejected by God because of his disobedience, Samuel was grieving for this. Then God appeared and told him to anoint one of Jesse’s sons as the next king (16:1), and Samuel came to Jesse’s house and found his older brothers who seemed to be outstanding in appearance and height. When he tried to anoint them, God said, “I the LORD sees the center,” and rejected them all. Finally, when the youngest David, who was herding the sheep in the field on the day Samuel visited, came home, God said Samuel to pour oil to David (16:12). Then the anointed David (estimated about 15 years old) was greatly moved by the Spirit of the LORD (16:13), and filled with God’s power.
- 그런 후, 다윗은 한편으로는 여전히 양을 치는 그의 일상 생활을 계속 하면서, 또 다른 한편으로는, 하나님께 버림을 받아 여호와의 영이 떠난 후 악령에게 시달림 받던 사울을 위해 수금으로 위로하기 위해 왕궁을 오가는 생활을 하고 있었습니다(삼상 16:14-23). 그러던 중 20살쯤 (추정) 되었을 때에, 마침 블레셋 군대가 처들어와 형들이 전쟁터로 불려 나가자 아버지의 부탁으로 형들에게 곡식과 떡을 전해주기 위해 전쟁터로 갔다가, 블레셋의 장수, 가드 사람 거인 골리앗이 하나님과 이스라엘을 모욕하는 말을 듣고, 분하여 물매돌로 그를 쳐 죽임으로 이스라엘 왕국의 전면에 등장한 사건입니다.
- After that, David continued his daily routine life of sheep-herding while he was also living in and out of the royal palace to comfort Saul, who was rejected by God, the spirit of the Lord left, and was afflicted by evil spirits (1 Sam 16:14-23). Then, at the age of 20 (estimated), when the Philistine army came in and his three brothers were called out to the battlefield. Oneday David went to the battlefield to deliver grain and bread to his brothers at the request of his father. And after hearing words of insulting Israel and God, David killed Goliath by striking him with a sling stone and appeared in the front of the kingdom of Israel.
- 오늘의 사건에서 몇가지 배우기를 원하는데, 첫째로는 “아버지의 양을 지킬 때에 사자나 곰이 와서 양 떼에서 새끼를 물어가면 내가 따라가서 그것을 치고 그 입에서 새끼를 건져내었(34-35)”다는 다윗의 말을 보면 다윗은 아버지가 맡긴 양을 칠 때에 양 새끼 한마리조차도 최선을 다해 지키고자 노력하였다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 비록 그 당시 양치는 일이 천하고 고된 일이었으며, 들짐승들에게 새끼 양들이 희생을 당하는 것은 흔한 일이었을 수 있지만, 다윗은 전심을 다하여, 아버지의 양새끼 한마리조차 지키고자 하는 마음으로 자기의 일에 최선을 다했다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
- We would like to learn a few things from today’s story. First, as David said, “When I was keeping my father’s sheep, if a lion or a bear came to bite the young from the flock, I chased it to save the lamp,” we can see that David tried to do his best to keep even one lamb when he was tending father’s sheep. Although shepherding at that time was lowly and hard work, and it may have been common for a lamb to be sacrificed by wild animals, David was willing to protect even one of his father’s lambs with all his heart.
- 그리고 두번째로는 칼과 창과 단창을 들고 갑옷을 입고 전쟁터에 나온 거인 골리앗을 물매돌로 이마를 쳐 죽인 것을 보면 평상시에 양들을 지키기 위해 물매돌을 던지는 연습을 많이 했을 것이라는 것을 쉽게 짐작할 수 있습니다. 그래서 새끼 양까지도 아끼는 다윗의 마음과 일상 생활에서의 성실함을 지켜 보셨던 하나님께서 “내가 너를 목장 곧 양을 따르는 데에서 데려다가 내 백성 이스라엘의 주권자로 삼았”(삼하 7:8)다고 말씀하셨던 것 같습니다.
- And secondly, seeing that David killed Goliath, a giant who came out on the battlefield wearing armor with a sword, a spear and a javelin, with a sling shot, we can guess that he would have practiced a lot of slings to protect the sheep. So it seems that God, who had been watching David’s heart for the lamb and his sincerity in his daily life, seemed to choose David as His king for His people, as it is said, “I have taken you from the ranch, that is, following the sheep, and made you sovereign over my people Israel” (2 Sam. 7:8).
- 또한 전쟁터로 오기 전에 양 지키는 자에게 그의 양을 맡겼다(20)는 말씀이나 자기의 짐을 짐 지키는 자의 손에 맡겼다(22)는 말씀으로 보면 그는 이미 다른 사람들을 부리는 위치에 있었다는 사실을 알 수 있으며, 싸움을 하기 전에 곁에 서 있는 사람들에게 이 블레셋 사람을 죽여 이스라엘의 치욕을 제거하는 사람에게 어떠한 대우를 할 것인지(26)를 확인하는 점과 익숙하지 않은 군복과 칼을 벗고 자기에게 잘 맞는 평상시의 옷을 입고 골리앗과의 전투에 나간 점등을 볼 때 그는 이미 나름 전투에 대한 경험과 방법을 가지고 있는 청년이었던 것을 알 수 있습니다.
- Also, from the facts that David entrusted his sheep to the sheep keeper before coming to the battlefield (20) and that he left his luggage in the hands of the keeper (22), we can imagine that he had been trained already to overtake other people. And also before the fight, the facts that he tried to watch the Israel soldiers’ heart, and that he took off the unfamiliar military uniform and sword which Saul gave and went to battle with Goliath in his own clothes with his stick and sling stones, we can see that he was a young man who already had many experiences of fights and knew how to fight.
- 그리고 다윗이 “여호와께서 나를 사자의 발톱과 곰의 발톱에서 건져내셨은즉 나를 이 블레셋 사람의 손에서도 건져내시리이다(37)”는 그의 말처럼, 평상시 양을 지키는 과정에서 하나님의 보호를 몸으로 체득하고 있었음을 알 수 있을 뿐 만 아니라, “너는 칼과 창과 단창으로 내게 나아 오거니와 나는 만군의 여호와의 이름 곧 네가 모욕하는 이스라엘 군대의 하나님의 이름으로 네게 나아가노라 오늘 여호와께서 너를 내 손에 넘기시리니 내가 너를 쳐서 네 목을 베고 블레셋 군대의 시체를 오늘 공중의 새와 땅의 들짐승에게 주어 온 땅으로 이스라엘에 하나님이 계신 줄 알게 하겠고 또 여호와의 구원하심이 칼과 창에 있지 아니함을 이 무리에게 알게 하리라 전쟁은 여호와께 속한 것인즉 그가 너희를 우리 손에 넘기시리라(45-47)”는 말씀에서 보면, 전쟁은 하나님께 속한 것이라는 뚜렷한 전쟁관과 굳센 믿음과 용기를 가지고 있었음을 알 수 있습니다.
- And as David said, “As the LORD has delivered me from the claws of lions and from the claws of bears, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine” (37), we can know that David already had confidence of God’s protection through the fights with lions or bears in the field. And also his word that “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands (45-47),” we can see clearly that he knew that the war belongs to God, and that he had strong faith and courage already.
- 이렇게 다윗의 성품과 재능을 눈여겨 보셨던 하나님께서는 골리앗을 앞세운 블레셋 군대와 겁을 먹고 전의를 상실한 이스라엘 군대가 40일 동안이나 대치하도록 하신 후 다윗이 골리앗을 쳐 죽이게 하심으로 그를 이스라엘 전면에 나타나도록 하신 것 같습니다.
- So, God, who had been watching David’s character and talent, made him appear in front of Israel by killing Goliath and defeating the Philistine army, after delaying the battle for 40 days in order for David to come and defeat them.
- 이 사건을 통해서, 일상의 하찮은 일이라도 성실하게 감당하며 왕이 되기 위한 재능들을 기른 다윗을 하나님의 때에 불러 내어 이스라엘의 역사 전면에 나타나도록 하신 하나님의 섭리를 보면서, 우리 어린이들도 지금 일상의 자리에서 하나님의 나라에 쓰임받을 수 있도록 내일을 준비하며 열심히 자기의 자리에서 맡은 공부에 최선을 다할 때, 하나님께서 세상을 맞설 담력과 믿음과 지혜도 함께 키워 주실 줄로 믿습니다.
- Through this story, seeing God’s providence that He brought David, who had been faithfully handling his daily trivial matters to develop the talents to become a king, and made him appear in the entire history of Israel, we can see that when we are taking our daily routine job – to study or work at home or school, to prepare our future, God cultivates our faith, courage and wisdom to face up with the world and then He will choose to use us in the kingdom of God.
- 기도하옵기는 사랑하는 우리 어린이들과 가정과 교회가, 현재 자기가 처한 일상에서 한낱 사소하게 보이는 일들일지라도 신실히 믿음으로 감당하며, 내일의 하나님 나라 큰 리더들로 자라날 수 있기를 소망하며 기도합니다.
- I pray that our dear children, families, and church can faithfully handle even the smallest things in their current daily situations and grow into the greatest leaders of the kingdom of God tomorrow.

Q2 From the beginning to the end, it seems that God always had been watching David how he did his work, caring him. After knowing that God always care for his chosen people even though they could not recognize Him in their life, how do you feel? 비록 그들이 그러한 사실을 깨닫지 못한다 할지라도, 처음부터 끝까지 하나님께서는 그의 선택한 사람들을 돌보시는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이러한 사실을 알 때, 여러분들은 어떤 생각이 듭니까?

(Through this question, we hope that our children will realize that the same God provides, keeps, and protects our children, as God did to David, and that our children can live in front of God (coram deo) in their daily lives.
