오늘은 연중시기 스물두번째 주일입니다. 지난 주에는 다윗의 어린 시절 이야기를 통해서, 평범한 일상의 생활을 충실히 살아가는 가운데, 그 과정에서 우리는 믿음과 성품과 능력을 연단 받고 장차 하나님 나라에 쓰임 받으며 하나님께 영광 올려드리는 삶을 살 수 있다는 사실을 배웠습니다. 이번 주에는 처음에는 주님께서 주시는 축복을 바라고 주님을 쫓아다녔지만, 결국 믿음에로의 초대를 거절하고 돌아서 주님을 다 떠나버린 사람들의 이야기를 통하여, 우리 믿음의 제자들은 때때로 주님의 말씀과 도전이 이해되지 않고 어렵게 느껴질 때에 어떤 자세로 주님과 함께 있어야 될지 생각해 보며 함께 은혜 받는 시간이 되기를 소망합니다.
Today is the twenty-second Sunday of the Ordinary Time. Last week, we learned that while we live our daily routine life faithfully, God will cultivate our faith, character and capability to use us for His Kingdom to glorify Him in the future, through the story of David’s childhood. This week, we will learn what we have to do, even when we cannot understand the will of God, through meditating on the stories of people who have been chasing for the Lord for the blessings of the Lord, but eventually rejected the invitation to the faith and turned away from the Lord when they cannot understand the difficult subject of the Gospel.
- 복음서들 (특히 마가복음)을 보면, 예수님께서 기적과 표적을 행하실 때 마다 사람들이 “놀랐다”고 증언하고 있으며, 또 예수님께서 많은 비유들로 가르치실 때 마다, 제자들 마저도 그 뜻을 잘 이해하지 못해 예수님께 찾아와 뜻을 묻는 것을 볼 수 있고 그 때마다, “너희가 아직도 깨닫지 못하느냐?”시며 책망하시며 제자들의 믿음을 키워주셨던 것을 볼 수 있습니다.
- In the Gospels (especially the Gospel of Mark), it is written that whenever Jesus performed miracles and signs, people were “surprised.” Also, whenever Jesus taught with many parables, the disciples seem not to understood the meaning of those teachings and to come to Jesus for teaching, even though Jesus rebuked them “Do you still not understand?” and Jesus taught them to cultivate their faith.
- 오늘의 본문을 좀 더 잘 이해하기 위해 6장 전반부에 나오는 몇가지 사건을 먼저 살펴 보기를 원합니다. 6장 전반부에는 두가지 사건이 기록되어 있는데, 첫번째는 1-15절에 가난한 어린 아이의 보리떡 다섯개와 물고기 두마리를 가지시고 오천명을 먹이시는 표적기사가 기록되어 있고 두번째는 16-21절에 그 이후 주님을 임금으로 삼고자 몰려든 사람들을 피하여, 밤에 갈릴리 바다를 건너 가버나움으로 제자를 먼저 보내신 후 물위를 걸어 합류하신 기적 사건이 기록되어 있습니다.
- To better understand today’s text, we need to first look at the context from the first half of Chapter 6. In the first half of Chapter 6, two events were recorded. The first, in verses 1-15, is the event that when a poor boy dedicated five barley loaves and two fish, Jesus five thousand people with them. The second, in verses 16-21, is that fleeing those who flocked to make the Lord king after the first miracle, Jesus walked to cross the Sea of Galilee at night to join them, after sending His disciples first to Capernaum.
- 먼저 오병이어(五餠二魚)로 오천명을 먹이신 사건은 유월절이 가까운 시점에 갈릴리 바다 동편 땅에서 베풀어 주신 표적인데, 인간적인 눈으로는 광야에서 오천명이나 되는 사람들을 도저히 먹일 수 없는 상황 (돈도 없을 뿐 더러 갑자기 그 많은 음식을 조달할 식당도 없는 상황)에서, 주님께서 보리떡 다섯개와 물고기 두 마리로 그들을 먹이신 사건입니다. 이는 이스라엘 백성들 스스로는 애굽의 고된 노역과 종살이로부터 헤어나올 수 없던 중에, 어린 양을 잡아 그 피를 문설주에 바르고 그 고기를 불에 구워 먹게 하신 후, 그 날 밤에 애굽에 큰 재앙을 내려 문설주에 피를 바르지 않은 집마다, 사람과 짐승을 막론하고 처음 태어난 모든 것들을 치심으로 마침내 이스라엘 백성들을 출애굽 시켰던 유월절 절기의 배경 하에서 유월절 어린 양의 예표가 바로 예수님 이심을 상기시켜 줄 뿐 만 아니라, 유월절 이후 광야에서 하늘의 만나로 이백만이 넘는 이스라엘 백성을 40년 동안이나 먹였던 것을 기억하며, “내 살은 참된 양식이요 내 피는 참된 음료(6:55)”라고 말씀해 주시는데로, 그들이 표적으로 구했던 하늘의 “만나”가 바로 영생을 주시는 예수님이심을 상기시켜 주는 사건인 것 입니다.
- The parable of feeding five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish happened in the east side of the Sea of Galilee at the time of the Passover. In a situation where there is no money and no restaurants to supply that much food suddenly, the Lord fed them using five barley loaves and two fish. This signifies that Jesus is the lamb which was grilled and eaten and the blood signs on the doorposts and the lintel at the Passover which the Israel ancestors experienced at the story of the exodus from Egypt, when they could not escape from the hard labor and slavery of Egypt. And also it reminds people that their ancestors, over two million Israelites, were fed with the manna from heaven and the quails for 40 years, so that as Jesus said, “My flesh is true food and my blood is the true drink (6:55),” He himself is the Manna as the bread for the eternal life.
- 그리고 이어 바다 위를 걸으신 사건은 오병이어 사건에 이어, 제자들에게 예수님께서 신적 능력을 가지신 분이심을 보여줌으로 그들의 믿음을 강화시켜 주신 사건이었습니다.
- And the even walking on the sea was an incident that strengthened their faith by showing the disciples that Jesus has divine power.
- 그런데, 사람들은 예수님께서 보여 주신 표적을 보고 주님이 구약에 예언된 메시야 이심을 깨닫고, 나아와 회개하고 믿음을 가지기 보다, 오히려 베풀어 주시는 세상적인 복, 즉, 먹거리를 바라고 주님을 쫓아 온 것을 아시고, “너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표적을 본 까닭이 아니요 떡을 먹고 배부른 까닭이”라고 하시며 그들을 나무라셨고, “썩을 양식을 위하여 일하지 말고 영원한 양식을 위하여 일하라”고 하시며, “인자는 하나님의 인치신 자로 영원한 양식을 주는 이(27)”라고 하시며, 하나님의 보내신 이를 믿는 것, 즉 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 일(29)을 하라고 말씀해 주셨습니다.
- By the way, when people saw the signs Jesus showed, they did not come to repent after realizing Jesus as the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament. Therefore Jesus said, “You are not looking for me because you saw signs, but because you ate the bread. Do not work for perishable food, but for everlasting food” so that they have to believe in Him, knowing Jesus is the one who gives eternal food (27).
- 그런데도 불구하고, 여전히 무리들은 모세가 보여준 만나의 표적과 같은 주님을 믿을 수 있는 표적을 또 보여달라(30-31)고 이야기 하였고 주님께서는 하나님께서 내려주신 그 생명의 떡이 바로 자기 자신(33, 35)이며, 하나님의 뜻은 아들을 보고 믿는 자마다 영생을 얻는 것이(40)라고 다시 말씀해 주셨습니다.
- But, even though they saw already signs of feeding thousand people and walking on the water, the crowd still ask Jesus to show another sign to believe in the Lord, like the sign of manna that Moses showed (30-31). So, the Lord again said that the bread of life that God gave is Himself (33, 35), and God’s will is that everyone who sees and believes in the Son will receive eternal life (40).
- 그런데 예수님의 거듭된 말씀에도 불구하고, 예수님이 요셉의 아들이시라는 선입견에 사로 잡혀 있던 유대인들이 수군거리며 믿지 않자, 아버지께서 이끌지 않으시면 아무도 내게 올 수 없다(44)고 하시며, 또 다시 한번 더, “내가 곧 생명의 떡(48)”인 바 “믿는 자는 영생(51)”을 얻게 될 것이라고 말씀해 주셨습니다.
- Despite His repeated words, the Jews, who had been preoccupied with the prejudice that Jesus was the son of Joseph, murmured and did not believe. So Jesus said that no one can come to Jesus unless the Father leads them (44) and once again, He told them “I am the bread of life (48) and he/she who believes will have eternal life (51).”
- 그러자 이번에는 예수님의 살을 먹는다는 것이 무엇인지에 대하여 자기들 끼리 논란하기 시작하였고, 이에 예수님께서는 또 다시 예수님과의 연합만이 영생(56)을 얻는 길이며 그것이 바로 예수님의 살과 피를 먹는다(54)는 의미, 즉, 예수님을 믿는 것(29)의 의미라고 설명해 주셨지만, 오히려 사람들은 “이 말씀은 어렵도다 누가 들을 수 있느냐” 하면서 결국 많은 사람들이 예수님을 떠나갔습니다.
- Then, they began to debate among themselves about what it means to eat Jesus’ flesh. Therefore, Jesus explained that the union with Jesus through His body and blood is the way to gain eternal life (56), and that is the meaning of eating Jesus’ flesh and blood (54), that is, believing in Jesus (29). But, people said, “These words are difficult. Who can hear them?” and in the end, they left Jesus.
- 그러나 예수님께서 택하여 세운 열두제자는 “너희도 가려느냐?”는 예수님의 말씀에 “주여 영생의 말씀이 주께 있사오니 우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까 우리가 주는 하나님의 거룩하신 자이신 줄 믿고 알았사옵나이다(68-69)”고 고백하며 예수님과 함께 하였고, 주님께서는 “내가 너희 열둘을 택하지 아니하였느냐(70)”고 말씀하시며 기뻐하셨습니다. 예수님의 택하심과 부르심에 대한 제자들의 믿음의 반응 그리고 그 믿음을 통한 진리의 깨달음의 과정을 엿볼 수 있는 대목입니다.
- However, the twelve disciples that Jesus chosen said “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God (68-69),” when Jesus asked them, “Are you going away too?” So the Lord was pleased by saying, “Have I not chosen you twelve?” This is the passage that shows Jesus’ election results in the disciples’ faith to calling, and then makes them understand the truth through that faith.
- 오늘 본문 말씀은 많은 도전을 우리에게 주는 것 같습니다. 과연 우리는 무엇을 바라고 예수님을 쫓고 있을까요? 먹고 배부른 까닭, 즉, 세상적인 축복을 받기 위함은 아닌지요? 아니면 도덕적인 아름다운 설교 이야기를 듣기 위함은 아닌가요? 아니면 혹 교회 생활에서 누를 수 있는 교제와 즐거움을 위한 것은 아닌가요? 이러한 내면의 동기를 다시 돌아보게 됩니다. 우리가 믿는 자로 세상을 산다는 것이 잘먹고 잘살고 행복한 일들만 있지는 아니할 터인데, “만일 네가 보행자와 함께 달려도 피곤하면 어찌 능히 말과 경주하겠느냐 네가 평안한 땅에서는 무사하려니와 요단 강물이 넘칠 때에는 어찌하겠느냐(렘12:5)”는 예레미야의 말씀처럼, 환란을 지나가야 하기도 하며, 예수님을 따르던 많은 제자들이 “이 말씀은 어렵도다 누가 들을 수 있겠느냐(60)?”고 말한 것처럼 때때로 이해가 되지 않는 말씀과 명령을 접해야 할텐데, 우리는 과연 그 순간을 어떻게 견디고 이겨내야 할 지? 과연 우리는 예수님의 열두 제자들처럼 믿음을 보이며 예수님과 끝까지 함께 할 수 있을 지 깊이 고민해보고 결단하기를 소망해 봅니다.
- Today’s text seems to give us many challenges. What are we hoping for and why are we following Jesus? Is it to receive worldly blessings so we are full? Or is it to hear a beautiful moral sermon? Or maybe is it for the fellowship and pleasure you can enjoy in church life? I hope you may look back on your inner motivation to follow Him. The life of believers does not mean that all things are going well and happy. “If you are tired even when running with a pedestrian, how can you race with a horse? You will be safe in a peaceful land, but what will you do when the Jordan River overflows (Jeremiah 12:5)?” As Jeremiah said, Christians have to go through some tribulations. As many of the disciples who followed the words, said “These words are difficult, who can hear them (60)?,” we will also meet some words and commands that are sometimes incomprehensible or not reasonable. How should we endure and overcome the moment? Indeed, like Jesus’ twelve disciples, we need faith and have to follow Him until the end. I hope you may make a decision now to follow Him no matter what the situation is.
- 세상의 초등학문도 배우고 갈고 닦음이 없으면 이해할 수도 없고 더 나아갈 수도 없으며, 세상의 인간적 종교들 조차도 깨닫음을 얻기 위하여 힘들게 평생을 정진하는데, 하물며 광대 무변하신 하나님을 안다는 것이 그리고 그분의 무한하신 진리의 말씀이 쉽게 이해가 될 수 있겠습니까? 비록 하나님께서 성령을 우리에게 부어주셨음에도 불구하고 우리가 그를 온전히 의지하기가 쉽지 않음을 우리가 잘알고, 또 예수님과 3년을 동행하면서도 예수님의 말씀을 깨닫지 못하여, 늘 “아직도 깨달음이 없느냐”고 질책을 받았던 제자들의 모습을 기억하며, 우리는 겸손히 주님의 말씀과 진리 앞에 서야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 중세에 처음 설립된 대학들에서는 신학과 철학과 법학과 의학을 가르쳤는데, 그 중에서 신학을 학문의 여왕으로 말했고 실제 신학박사가 되기 위해서는 16년이라는 기간이 걸렸으며 (지금도 학부4년, 목회 신학과정 4년, 목회 석사과정 2년, 박사과정 5년 15년) 이러한 과정들을 통해서 교회사에 빛나는 인물들, 토마스 아퀴나스, 에라스무스, 이그나티우스 로욜라, 존 칼빈 등이 배출되었던 것을 기억하고 하나님을 아는 일에 더욱 겸손한 마음으로 경외하며 나아올 수 있기를 소망합니다.
- Without learning and polishing, the world’s elementary studies cannot be understood or progressed further, and also even the human religions of the world require the devotion of their entire life to gain enlightenment. How can the word of the truth be easily understood? Even though God poured out the Holy Spirit on us, we know that it is not easy for us to fully rely on Him so that we cannot understand the truth even when the Holy Spirit explains us as His disciples who had been walking with Jesus for three years could not understand the words of Jesus and they were rebuked. So, we should humbly stand before the word and truth of the Lord to understand the secret of the Gospel. Universities first established in the Middle Ages taught theology, philosophy, law, and medicine. Among them, they said that theology was the queen of science so it took 16 years to become a theological doctor (still it takes 15 years for PhD – 4 years undergraduate, 4 years Minister of Divinity, 2 years of ThM, and 5 years of doctoral program). Through these courses, the theologians such as Thomas Aquinas, Erasmus, Ignatius Loyola, and John Calvin, were discharged so that I hope we may stand in front of God and the knowledge of God with humble heart and the fear of God.
- 기도하옵기는 우리 자녀들과 가정들과 교회가, 지식이 범람하여 초스피드로 지식이 전파되고 있을 뿐 만 아니라, 파워포인트등을 활용한 시작적이고 감각적으로 지식에 접근하는 오늘날의 포스트 모더니즘 문화 속에서도, 놀랍고 무한한 하나님을 아는 지식을 소망하고 추구하며, 겸손하게 하나님을 경외하는, 세상이 감당할 수 없는 하나님의 사람들로 세워질 수 있기를 기도합니다.
- I pray that our children, families, and churches become His people that the world cannot bear by seeking the knowledge of God with humble mind and the fear of God, even in the era that the worldly knowledge is spreading fast and overflowing, with the culture where people pursue very superficial and visual knowledge, etc..

Q1 Those who followed Jesus, when Jesus played miracle and signs, left when He invited them to the faith, proclaiming the word of the Gospel. I wonder how Jesus felt, while seeing those people? Don’t you have similar experience? Don’t you have experiences that your friends leave you when it is hard or difficult to understand, as they have been with you when everything’s going well? Would you share how you felt in that case? 예수님께서 기적을 베푸실 때에 주님을 쫓아 다녔던 많은 사람들이 예수님께서 진리의 말씀을 선포하시며 믿음에로 초대했을 때, 떠나가 더 이상 예수님을 쫓지 않았을 때, 예수님의 마음은 어떠한 마음이셨을까요? 여러분들은 그런 경험이 없으신가요? 좋을 때는 친구로 있다가 어렵고 이해가 되지 않는 상황이 벌어지면 쉬 떠나버리는 그런 경험을 한적이 없으신가요? 그때 여러분들의 마음이 어떠 했는지 나누어 줄수 있으신가요?
(이 질문을 통해서, 우리 자녀들이 예수님의 마음을 공감해 볼 수 있기를 소망합니다. 하늘 보좌 버리시고 이땅에 오셔서 죽기까지 세상을 사랑하셨던 예수님, 따르는 무리들을 보시고 목자없는 양같음을 인하여 늘 눈물 흘리시며 긍휼히 여기시고 그들을 입히시고 먹이시고 치료해 주셨던 예수님! 그리고 기적과 표적을 베푸시며 회개하여 하나님께 돌아오기를 간절히 권면하셨던 예수님께서 진리의 말씀을 선포하시자, 그 많던 사람들이 다 돌아서서 떠나 버리고 열두제자만 남았을 때 예수님의 마음은 어떠했을지 한번 생각해 보고, 또한 우리들의 자세가 어떠해야 할 지 생각해 보는 시간이 되기를 소망합니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시면서, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)
(Through this question, I hope our children will be able to empathize with the heart of Jesus. Jesus, who forsaken the heavenly throne and came to this earth to love His people in the world until his death, being compassionate to the people for being like sheep without a shepherd, clothed them, fed them, and healed them. But, when Jesus, who had performed miracles and signs, appealing them to repent and return to God, proclaiming the word of truth, many of them turned away and left, but only the twelve disciples remained. I hope that this will be a time to think about what Jesus’ heart would have been like when they left, and also to think about what our attitude should be like. We hope that you will be able to actively listen and share empathy with your children.)
Q2 When Jesus taught the truth which is not easy, even too difficult to understand, lots of people left Jesus. But, His disciples did not leave Him. I wonder how Jesus felt when His disciples did not leave Him? Do you have a friend who will not leave you, in good or in bad? 이해하기 쉽지 않은 어려운 이야기를 듣자 많은 사람들이 떠나 버렸지만, 예수님께서 택하신 열두제자는 끝까지 예수님께 남아 있었습니다. 이렇게 어려울 때에도 예수님 곁에 끝까지 남아있던 열두제자들을 보는 예수님의 마음은 어떠했을까요? 여러분들께도 그런 친구들이 있나요? 좋을 때도 어려울 때도 끝까지 남아서 함께 해 주는 친구들! 그런 친구들이 있나요?
(이 질문을 통하여, 우리 자녀들이 어떠한 상황에도 예수님께 붙어 있으며, 어려운 문제도 예수님께 가져와 풀면서 끝까지 믿음으로 승리할 수 있기를 … 그렇게 결단할 수 있기를 소망해봅니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시기도 하고, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)
