Today’s Scripture:
Psalm 16
1 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”
3 I say of the holy people who are in the land, “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
4 Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips.
5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. (NIV)

5 여호와는 나의 산업과 나의 잔의 소득이시니 나의 분깃을 지키시나이다

Physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted, I curled up in my recliner. Our family had followed God’s leading and had moved from California to Wisconsin. After we arrived, our car broke down and left us without a vehicle for two months. Meanwhile, my husband’s limited mobility after an unexpected back surgery and my chronic pain complicated our unpacking. We uncovered costly problems with our new-to-us, old home. Our senior dog suffered with health issues. And though our new pup brought great joy, raising a furry ball of energy was far more work than anticipated. My attitude soured. How was I supposed to have unshakeable faith while traveling on a bumpy road of hardships?
As I prayed, God reminded me of the psalmist whose praise didn’t depend on circumstances. David poured out his emotions, often with great vulnerability, and sought refuge in the presence of God (Psalm 16:1). Acknowledging God as provider and protector (vv. 5–6), he praised Him and followed His counsel (v. 7). David affirmed that he would “not be shaken” because he kept his eyes “always on the Lord” (v. 8). So, he rejoiced and rested secure in the joy of God’s presence (vv. 9–11).
We too can delight in knowing our peace doesn’t depend on our present situation. As we thank our unchanging God for who He is and always will be, His presence will fuel our steadfast faith.—Xochitl Dixon

육체적으로 정신적으로, 그리고 감정적으로 지쳐서 나는 등받이가 젖혀지는 안락의자에 몸을 파묻었습니다. 우리 가족은 하나님의 인도하심을 따라 캘리포니아 주에서 위스콘신 주로 이사했습니다. 도착 후, 차가 고장 나서 우리는 두 달 동안 차가 없이 지냈습니다. 그 동안 남편은 예기치 못한 허리 수술을 받아 제대로 움직일 수 없었고 나도 고질적인 통증 때문에 짐을 풀기가 어려웠습니다. 새로 이사 온 낡은 집은 돈을 많이 들여 고쳐야 할 문제들이 있다는 것도 알게 되었습니다. 게다가 우리 나이든 개는 병으로 힘들어 했습니다. 새 강아지가 큰 기쁨을 주기는 했지만 에너지가 넘치는 털북숭이 강아지를 기르는데 생각보다 일이 훨씬 많았습니다. 살기가 싫어졌습니다. 그런데 이렇게 험난한 고난의 길을 가면서 내가 어떻게 흔들리지 않는 믿음을 가질 수 있었을까요?
내가 기도할 때 하나님은 환경에 휘둘리지 않고 찬양했던 시편 기자를 생각나게 해주셨습니다. 다윗은 가끔 크게 상처입기 쉬운 형편에서 그의 감정들을 쏟아내면서 피난처를 찾아 하나님께로 나아갔습니다(시편 16:1). 공급하시고 보호하시는 하나님을 믿고 (5-6절) 하나님을 송축하고 그분의 훈계를 따랐습니다(7절). 다윗은 그의 눈이 “여호와를 항상” 바라보았기에 “흔들리지 않았다”(8절) 고 했습니다. 그래서 그는 즐거워하며 하나님 임재의 기쁨 안에서 안전히 쉴 수 있었습니다(9-11절).
우리도 우리의 평안이 현재 상황에 달려 있지 않다는 사실을 알면 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 우리가 지금 살아계시고 또 영원히 계실 하나님께 감사할 때, 함께 하시는 하나님이 우리의 확고한 믿음을 더 북돋아 주실 것입니다.
