영과 진리로 예배하는 예배자를 찾으시는 하나님 아버지께서, 우리의 예배를 통해 올려 드리는 모든 감사와 찬양과 영광을 기쁘게 받으실 줄 믿습니다.
We believe that Heavenly Father, who is looking for worshipers who worship with spirit and truth, will gladly receive all the thanks, praise, and glory that we offer through our worship.
지난 주에는, 신명기 4장 15-31절 말씀을 통하여, 제2계명 “너를 위하여 새긴 우상을 만들지 말고 또 위로 하늘에 있는 것이나 아래로 땅에 있는 것이나 땅 아래 물속에 있는 것의 어떤 형상도 만들지 말며 그것들에 절하지 말며 그것들을 섬기지 말라 (출 20:4-5)”는 말씀에 대해서 배웠는데, 하나님 이외의 우상을 섬기지 않아야 할 뿐 만 아니라 하나님을 우리의 생각으로 가두고 제한하지 말아야 한다고 배웠습니다. 이번 주에는 레위기 24:10-16 말씀을 통하여 제3계명 “너는 네 하나님 여호와의 이름을 망령되게 부르지 말라 여호와는 그의 이름을 망령되게 부르는 자를 죄 없다 하지 아니하리라 (출20:7)”는 말씀에 대해서 배워보고 은혜 나누기를 소망합니다.
Last week, through Deut 4:15-31, we learned that we should not only worship idols, but also should not limit or confine God according to our thought or imagination through the second commandment “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below and you shall not bow down to them or worship them (Ex20:4-5)”. This week, through Lev 24:10-16, we would like to learn about the third commandment “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name (Ex 20:7).”
- 이번 주 함께 배우실 제3계명은 “너는 네 하나님 여호와의 이름을 망령되게 부르지 말라 여호와는 그의 이름을 망령되게 부르는 자를 죄 없다 하지 아니하리라 (출20:7)”는 말씀입니다. 예로부터 동양에서는 하나님 뿐 만 아니라 윗사람의 이름을 함부로 부르면 예의에 어긋난다고 여기는 문화가 있어, 사람들 사이에서 지위, 연소 고하를 막론하고 서로 허물 없이 부르기 위해 자나 호를 지어 부르기도 했었습니다. 특히 표의문자인 한자를 쓰던 문화권에서 이름에 사용된 한자의 의미를 소중히 여겼고 심지어 이름을 그 사람의 인격 자체로 생각하여 심지어 이름을 직접 부르는 것조차도 예의에 어긋난다고 여기기도 했습니다. 히브리어도 각각의 알파벳에는 의미가 있어 이름을 부여한다는 것은 각사람의 인격을 표현하는 의미가 있었기에, 특히 제3계명에서 말씀 하셨듯 하나님의 이름은 직접 부르는 것조차도 피하여, 성경에서 하나님의 이름 “יהוה” (YHWH) 를 만나면, “아도나이” 즉 주님으로 발음하였고, 이런 관습을 반영하여 NIV 등 영어 성경에서는 “The LORD”라고 번역하기도 하였습니다.
- The third commandment which we will learn this week is “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name (Ex 20:7).” From of old, in the Oriental area, people have been thinking that it is against etiquette to use the name of not only God but also the name of superiors. In particular, in a culture where ideographic Chinese characters are used, since one’s name has its own special meaning, his or her name was treated to represent one’s personality and as himself or herself so that even direct-calling of one’s name was considered very rude. And the alphabet of the Hebrew has its own meaning so that each name also has its own meaning to represent one’s personality. Therefore the Israelites have been avoiding to call God’s name directly, in addition to the third commandment, so whenever they meet God’s name “יהוה” (YHWH), they pronounced “Adonai”, that is, “the LORD” so that reflecting this custom, NIV translates “יהוה” (YHWH), as “The LORD”.
- 특히 오늘 본문에 의하면, 여호와 하나님의 이름을 모독하거나 저주하면 심지어 거류민이든지 본토인이든지를 무론하고 돌로 처 죽이는 등 아주 엄한 처벌을 받았습니다. 이렇게 아주 엄한 처벌이 따랐던 제3계명의 목적을 칼빈은 “하나님께서는 우리가 그의 이름의 위엄을 높이 받들기를 바라신다는 것을 가르치는데 있다”고 하며, 우리가 “하나님의 이름을 함부로 불경한 태도로 취급하여 그 이름을 욕되게 해서는 안된다”는 뜻이 있는 바, “하나님에 대해서와 그의 신비한 일들에 대해서 생각하거나 말할 때에 언제나 경건함과 진지함으로 하도록 해야 하며, 하나님의 역사를 다룰 때에도 그를 존귀하게 하는 것 이외에는 아무것도 생각하지 말아야 한다”고 했습니다. (칼빈, 기독교강요, II.8.22) 그러면서 칼빈은 제3계명은 다음 세가지는 꼭 지켜야 함을 가르쳐 주는데, “첫째는 우리의 마음으로 하나님에 대해서 무엇을 생각하든, 우리의 입으로 무엇을 말하든, 하나님의 위대하심을 나타내야 하고, 그의 거룩하신 이름의 높으심에 걸맞아야 하고, 그의 위대하심을 영화롭게 해야 한다. 둘째로 하나님의 거룩한 말씀과 존귀한 신비들을 우리 자신의 야망이나 탐욕 혹은 오락을 위하여 경솔하게 혹은 악의로 남용해서는 안되며, 그것들에 하나님의 이름의 위엄이 새겨져 있는 만큼, 그것들을 존귀하게 여기고 높이 기려야 한다. 마지막으로 패역한 자들이 하나님을 대적하여 소리를 지르기를 잘 하나, 우리는 하나님의 역사를 훼방하거나 폄하해서는 안되며, 무슨 일이든 하나님께서 행하시는 것으로 인정되는 것에 대해서는 그의 지혜와 의와 선하심을 찬양하는 말을 해야 한다”고 했습니다. (Inst, II.2.22)
- In particular, according to today’s text, whoever curses God or blasphemes the name of the LORD was stoned to death. Calvin explains the purpose of the third commandment as that “God wills that we hallow the majesty of his name. Therefore, it means in brief that we are not to profane his name by treating it contemptuously and irreverently. To this prohibition duly corresponds the commandment that we should be zealous and careful to honor his name with godly reverence. Therefore we ought to be so disposed in mind and speech that we neither think nor say anything concerning God and his mysteries, without reverence and much soberness; that in estimating his works we conceive nothing but what is honorable to him.”[1] Therefore Calvin suggested to keep three things as follows: “First, whatever our mind conceives of God, whatever our tongue utters, should savor of his excellence, match the loftiness of his sacred name, and lastly, serve to glorify his greatness. Secondly, we should not rashly or perversely abuse his Holy Word and worshipful mysteries either for the sake of our own ambition, or greed, or amusement; but, as they bear the dignity of his name imprinted upon them, they should ever be honored and prized among us. Finally, we should not defame or detract from his works, as miserable men are wont abusively to cry out against him; but whatever we recognize as done by him we should speak of with praise of his wisdom, righteousness, and goodness. That is what it means to hallow God’s name.[2]”
- 오늘 본문 말씀을 통해서 몇가지 은혜를 나누기 원하는 데, 첫번째 하나님의 이름은 성경에서 여러가지 의미로 사용되는데, 1) 시 5:11 “주의 이름을 사랑하는 자들은 주를 즐거워하리로다”는 말씀처럼 하나님 자신을 나타내기도 하고, 2) 시 135:3 “여호와를 찬송하라 여호와는 선하시며 그의 이름이 아름다우니 그의 이름을 찬양하라”는 말씀처럼 그의 거룩하고 선하신 속성을 의미하기도 하며, 3) 신 18:19 “내 이름으로 전하는 내 말을 듣지 아니하는 자는 내게 벌을 받을 것이요”라고 하신 것처럼 하나님의 뜻과 명령을 의미하기도 하고, 또 4) 미가 4:5 “만민이 각각 자기의 신의 이름을 의지하여 행하되 오직 우리는 하나님 여호와의 이름을 의지하여 영원히 행하리로다”는 말씀과 같이 하나님에 대한 신뢰와 기도 찬양과 고백등 하나님께 드리는 경배를 의미한다 (자카리우스, 하이델베르그 요리문답 주석). 따라서, 제1계명이 참된 예배의 대상에 대한 말씀이었고, 제2계명이 참된 예배의 방법에 대한 것이었다면, 제3계명은 참된 예배의 정신에 대해서 말씀하고 있는 바, 하나님을 경배함에 있어, 주님께서 주기도문에 가르쳐 주신데로 “하나님의 이름이 거룩히 여김”을 받으실 수 있도록 예배하여야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 두번째로 우리는 예배할 때 뿐 만 아니라 일상에서도 하나님의 이름을 가볍게 거짓되게 욕되게 사용하는 것을 금해야 하는데, 여기서 가볍게 사용한다는 것은 일상적인 대화에 사용하듯 그렇게 사용하는 것으로 그리스도께서 “오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다 아니라 아니라 하라 (마 5:37)”고 하신 말씀과 상반되게 사용하는 것을 말하는 것이며, 거짓되게 사용한다는 것은 부당한 맹세와 위증에 하나님의 이름을 사용하는 것이요, 욕되게 사용한다는 것은 하나님의 이름을 빙자하여 귀신들의 역사를 방조하는 것으로, 저주와 신성모독과 점술에 그 이름을 사용하는 것을 뜻하는 것으로 “네 하나님 여호와의 이름을 망령되게 부르지 말라”는 말씀은 곧 거짓 맹세도 하지 말고 또한 하나님을 존귀하게 여기지 않을 일에 하나님의 이름을 거명하지 말라는 것압니다. (자카리우스, 하이델베르그 요리문답 주석서) 따라서, 마지막으로 우리는 하나님의 이름을 엄숙하게, 신앙적으로 존귀하게 사용해야 하는데, 하나님의 본질과 뜻과 역사하심에 관한 참된 도리를 전파하는 일과 하나님의 진리를 선포하는 일과 하나님께 감사하고 찬송하며 영광을 돌리는 일에 하나님의 이름을 사용해야 할 줄로 믿습니다.
- Through today’s Bible verses, we would like to learn few things; First, the name of God is used as several meanings: 1) As Ps 5:11 “those who love your name may exult in you,” It signifies God himself.[3] 2) As Ps 135:3“Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing to his name, for it is pleasant!”, it signifies the attributes of God[4] of His holiness and goodness. 3) As Deut 18:19 “And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him,” it signifies the will or commandment of God.[5] 4) As Micah 4:5 “For all the peoples walk each in the name of its god, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God forever and ever,” it signifies “the worship of God, confidence, prayer, praising and professing God.”[6] Therefore, as the first commandment teaches us about to whom we worship and the second commandment teaches us how to worship Him, we have to worship our God His name to be hallowed as our Lord taught us. Secondly, not only in the worship of Him, but also in our daily lives, we have not to use His name “rashly, which is to use it lightly, falsely and reproachfully. To use the name of the Lord lightly, is to make use of it as in ordinary talk and conversation, contrary to what Christ says, ‘Let your communication be yea, yea; nay, nay.’ (Matt. 5:37.) Falsely, as in unlawful oaths and perjury; reproachfully, as in cursing, blasphemy and sorcery, in which the works of the devil are cloaked under the name of God. The sense then, is, Thou shalt not use the name of the Lord thy God rashly; that is, thou shalt not only not forswear, but thou shalt not make any mention of the name of God that would not be honorable to him.”[7] Therefore, finally we have to use His name lawfully and honorably to proclaim “the true doctrine respecting the essence, will and works of God,”[8] to preach the truth of God, and to thank praise, and glorify God.
- 기도하옵기는, 사랑하는 우리 KPCM 자녀들과 가족들과 교회에, 성령강림후 여덟번째 주일을 맞아, 존귀하신 하나님의 이름을 높이고 영화롭게 하고 경배함으로 하나님을 기뻐시게 하는 복을 누리시기를 기도합니다.
- I pray that His beloved KPCM children, families and church may enjoy His blessings to please God by exalting and glorifying and worshiping His glorious and honorable name, in the eighth week after the Pentecost.

(Through this question, I hope our children may recognize that there are many friends who make fun of others’ names or tease them with their names so that it hurts a lot friends’ heart and even results in serious mental illness of friends.
