오늘은 연중시기 열여덟번째 주일입니다. 지난 주에는 가나안 땅에 살면서 백성들이 겪는 여러가지 도전들 중에 불신과 의심에 대해 알아 보았고 또한 하나님의 “큰은혜”는 우리를 견인하여 마침내 승리하게 하실 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이번 주에는 우리가 하나님의 지식에서 성장하는 과정에서 겪는 어려움이 있는데, 때때로 우리의 삶에 일어나는 일들이 도무지 이해가 되지 않을 때도 있고, 또 하나님의 말씀데로 산다는 것이 너무 힘들게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 그럴때 우리는 어떻게 해야 되는지 한번 알아보았으면 좋겠습니다.
Today is the 18th Sunday of the second Ordinary Time. Last week, we talked about unbelief and doubt among many challenges that His people faced while living in Canaan and learned how God’s “great grace” led them into final triumph. This week, we would talk about how we can cope with some difficult situations in our Spiritual journey with Jesus, i.e., when we cannot understand why some things happened in our lives or when we feel too difficult to live into the will of God.
- 동일한 우화를 전하는 다른 복음서들 (마가 10:17-31, 누가 18:18-30)을 종합해 보면, 오늘의 본문은 젊은 부자 관원, 즉 그 시대 리더의 위치에 있는 사람으로 또한 부자 (그 당시에는 부가 하나님의 축복으로 간주되었기에, 종교적 리더들은 웬만큼 부유할 것이라는 사회통념이 있었음) 였던 한 사람에 대한 이야기입니다.
- According to the other Gospels (Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30), today’s text is a story about a man who was a young ruler and was in the position of a leader and rich, while at the time, wealth was regarded as a blessing from God, so there was a common belief that religious leaders would be rich enough.
- 그 젊은 종교 지도자가 예수님의 가르침을 듣고 놀라서, 예수님께 찾아와서는 “선생님! 무슨 선한 일을 하여야 영생을 얻겠습니까?” (v.16) 라고 질문을 하였습니다. 적어도 질문 자체가 “영생”에 대한 올바른 관심을 나타내고 있기는 하지만, 종교 지도자 답게(?) “나는 하나님 앞에서 어떤 존재가 되어야 하는가 보다 “내가 무슨 선한 일을 하여야 하는가?”라며 행위에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.
- After being surprised with the teachings of Jesus, the young religious leader came to Jesus and asked, “Teacher! What good things must I do to get eternal life?” (v.16). Even though the question itself expresses the right interest in “eternal life”, but he seems to miss the point who he is before God, rather focusing on the doing as a religious leader.
- 그러자, 예수님께서는 먼저 “선한 이는 오직 한 분 하나님 뿐”이시(v.17)라며, 생명에 이르는 길은 계명을 지키는 것이라고 말씀해 주셨고, 어떤 계명을 말씀하시는지를 묻자, 예수님께서는 십계명에 대해 설명해 주셨습니다.
- Then, as He first said that “there is only one God that is good” (v.17), Jesus taught him that the way to life is to keep the commandments. And then the rich ruler asked what commandments he was saying, so that Jesus explained the Ten Commandments.
- 그런데 청년은 십계명을 모두 지켰다고 이야기하면서 “아직도 부족한 것이 있습니까?(v.20)”라고 물었고, 이때 예수님께서는 “네가 완전하고자 하려면 가서 네 소유를 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주라”고 도전하시며, “그리고 와서 나를 따르라”고 하셨습니다. 그러자 이 말씀을 들은 그 젊은 관원은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 자기 소유가 많음으로 인하여 근심하며 돌아갔다고 말하고 있습니다.
- But the young man said that he had kept all the commandments and asked, “Is there anything that is still lacking?” At that time, Jesus challenged, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell what you have and give it to the poor. And come, follow me.” Then, the young ruler who heard these words went back in distress because he had big possessions.
- 오늘의 말씀을 보면, 예수님께서는 제1~4계명의 하나님에 대한 계명이나, 제10계명 탐심에 대한 계명, 즉 우리의 내면에 대한 계명조차 언급하지 않으시고도, 제5~9계명과 그 계명들의 요약인 “네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라”는 계명만으로도 어릴때 부터 계명을 완벽하게 지켜 왔다고 자부하는 교만한 부자 관원을 깨우쳐, 마태복음 23:23 “화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 너희가 박하와 회향과 근채의 십일조는 드리되 율법의 더 중한 바 정의와 긍휼과 믿음은 버렸도다 그러나 이것도 행하고 저것도 버리지 말아야 할지니라”는 말씀처럼 하나님의 법은 단순히 문자적인 의미 뿐 만 아니라 그 계명의 정신까지 지켜야 하는 것이며, 로마서 3:20 “그러므로 율법의 행위로 그의 앞에 의롭다 하심을 얻을 육체가 없나니 율법으로는 죄를 깨달음이니라”는 말씀처럼 율법을 완전히 지켜 의롭다 하심을 얻을 수 있는 사람은 없다는 것을 가르쳐 주셨습니다.
- Looking at today’s message, Jesus does not mention the 1st~4th commandments which is the duty to God, the10th commandments for covetousness, that is, even the commandments for our inner heart. Rather after mentioning the 6th~9th and then 5th commandment, following with the commandment of “Love your neighbor as yourself,” as the summary of the second parts of the Ten commandments regarding the duty toward fellow human beings. As Matthew 23:23 says “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees hypocrites, ye shall give you tithes of mint, fennel, and rootstock, but you have abandoned the more important of the law, justice, compassion, and faith. However, you must do this, and not abandon that,” since God’s law should be kept not only in its literal meaning, but also until the spirit of its commandments, Jesus awakened the rich ruler who was proud to have kept the commandments perfectly from childhood. Jesus taught us that no one can be justified by keeping the law completely, as Romans 3:20 says that “There is no flesh that can be justified before Him by the works of the law.”
- 부자 관원이 근심하며 돌아가자, 이제는 예수님의 제자들이 놀라서 “그렇다면 누가 구원을 얻을 수 있으리이까?” 라고 묻는 상황이 벌어 졌습니다. 왜냐하면, 제자들은 당시 유대인들, 특히 지도자급에 있는 바리새인들이 얼마나 철저하게 율법을 지키며 정결한 종교적 삶을 살아 왔는지 보아 왔었는데, 그들조차도 구원을 받을 수 없다는 현실 앞에, 하물며 어부로 살아왔던 자기들은 어떻게 영생을 얻을 수 있을지 참으로 답답한 심정이었기 때문이었습니다.
- When the rich ruler went back in distress, the disciples of Jesus were now amazed and asked, “If so, who can be saved?” The disciples asked the question because they have seen how thoroughly the Jews, especially the Pharisees at the leadership level, had been keeping the law at that time and how faithfully they lived a pure religious life. In the face of the reality that even Jews could not be saved, the disciples were really frustrated about how they could obtain eternal life as fishermen.
- 그러자 예수님께서는 “사람으로는 할 수 없으나 하나님으로서는 다 하실 수 있(v.26)” 다고 말씀해 주셨습니다.
- Then Jesus said, “Man cannot do it, but God can do everything (v.26).”
- 그렇습니다. 우리 인간의 어떤 행위도 완전하신 하나님 보시기에는 완벽한 선한 일이 될 수가 없습니다. 우리의 지,정,의 모든 영역이 부패되어 있기 때문(창 6:5; 8:21)입니다. 따라서, 구원(칭의도 성화도)은 절대적으로 하나님의 은혜로 이루어 지는 것입니다.
- Yes! None of our human actions can be perfectly good in the sight of a perfect God, because all areas of our intellect, emotion, and will, are corrupted (Gen 6:5; 8:21). Therefore, salvation (justification and sanctification) is absolutely come from God by His grace.
- 그리고, 이 우화에서 한가지 더 우리가 주목하기를 원하는 것은, 오늘 예수님의 가르침을 받은 부자 관원과 제자들의 차이점입니다. 두 그룹 모두 놀라기는 마찬가지였습니다. 그런데, 그들의 반응은 사뭇 달랐습니다. 무슨 말인가하면, 부자 관원은 근심하여 예수님을 떠나가 버렸고, 제자들은 놀랐지만 오히려 예수님께 달려 와서 묻고 메달렸습니다. 즉, 제자들과 이 젊은 관원의 차이점은, 사람들이 보기에 누가 더 훌륭한가도, 누가 더 똑똑한가도 아니라, 때때로 이해가 되지 않고 어려운 도전이 있더라도, 예수님 옆에 누가 끝까지 남아 있는가 입니다.
- One more thing we want to pay attention to in this fable is the difference between the rich rulers and disciples who were there with Jesus. Both were surprised. However, their reactions were quite different. In other words, the rich ruler left Jesus in sorrow, while the disciples ran to Jesus and asked Him. In other words, the difference between the disciples and this young ruler is not who is better or smarter in people’s eyes, but who remains next to Jesus to ask sometimes they could not understand, to the end, even if it is sometimes incomprehensible and difficult challenges.
- 이러한 예들은 성경에서 무수히 찾아볼 수 있는 것 같습니다. 요한복음 6장에 보면, 예수님께서 기적을 베푸셔서 오천명을 먹이신 후에는 엄청난 사람들이 예수님을 따랐지만, 이어서 이해하기가 어려운 “생명의 떡”에 관한 말씀을 하시자 “이 말씀은 어렵도다 누가 들을 수 있느냐!(요6:60)” 하면서 예수님을 따르던 많은 사람들이 떠나 버렸지만(요6:66), 베드로와 제자들은 오히려 “주여 영생의 말씀이 주께 있사오니 우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까! 우리는 주는 하나님의 거룩하신 자이신 줄 믿고 알았습니다!”고 고백하며 끝까지 예수님을 따랐습니다. 그리고 마태복음 16장에도 보면, 처음에 “주는 그리스도시요 살아계신 하나님의 아들이시(마16:16)”라고 고백했던 베드로가 그 다음 장면에서 예수님께서 예루살렘에 올라가 많은 고난을 받고 죽임을 당하시고 제삼일에 살아날 것이라고 알려 주시자(마16:21) 베드로가 예수님께 “주여 그리 마옵소서 이 일이 결코 주께 미치지 아니하리이다”고 항변하자, 예수님께서 엄히 책망 하셨는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 베드로는 끝까지 예수님을 쫓았습니다. 그리고 마태복음 27장에서는 예수님을 배신했던 유다는 뒤늦게 자기 잘못을 깨닫고 스스로 뉘우쳤지만 (마27:3) 목매어 죽어 버린(마27:5) 반면, 심지어 예수님을 저주까지 하면서 세번이나 부인하였지만(마26:69-74) 죄를 회개하고(마 26:75), 또 죄책감으로 괴로워 하면서도(요20:3; 21:3) 부활하신 예수님 곁에 끝까지 남았던 베드로의 예들을 볼 수 있습니다.
- These examples seem to be found countless in the Bible. In John 6, after Jesus performed a miracle and fed 5,000 people, a great number of people followed him, but when he said about the “bread of life” which was difficult to understand, as they said “This is difficult. Who can hear?” in John 6:60, they left (John 6:66). But Peter and his disciples stayed with Jesus, saying, “Lord, the words of eternal life are with you, to whom shall we stray! We believed and knew that you were the Holy One of God!” After confessing, they followed Jesus to the end. And in Matthew 16, Peter confessed first that “The Lord is the Christ and the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). In the next scene, Jesus went up to Jerusalem in order to be suffered and be killed, yet be resurrected on the third day (Mt 16:21) Peter protested to Jesus, saying, “Lord, don’t do that, this will never reach you.” So Jesus severely rebuked him, but he did not leave Jesus. And in Matthew 27, Judas, who betrayed Jesus, later realized his fault and repented of himself (Matthew 27:3), was hanged and died, not returning to Jesus (Matthew 27:5), even though he denied Him three times, even cursed Jesus, he remained by the risen Jesus to the end.
- 그렇습니다. 우리가 하나님의 은혜로 구원을 받고, 이 땅에서 감사하며 하나님의 말씀으로 인도함을 받다 보면, 말씀이 다 믿어지고 또 다 이해가 되어지지는 않은 것 같습니다. 때때로 어떤 성경 말씀은 평생 붙들고 고민해도 이해가 되지 않는 것들이 있을 수 있고, 심지어 주님의 책망을 받기도 하고, 또 도저히 감당할 수 없을 것 같은 일에 도전을 주시기도 합니다. 그때 끝까지 주님 곁에 남아 주님의 뜻을 묻기도 하고 또 주님께서 주시는 도전과 씨름하기도 하는 과정에서 우리의 믿음도 자라고 또 그런 과정에서 우리 스스로의 힘으로는 아무것도 할 수 없는 존재임을 깨닫고 겸손해 져서 더욱 하나님의 은혜를 의지하는 주님의 제자들로 성장하게 될 줄로 믿습니다.
- While we are living the life of gratitude, after being saved by God in His grace, being guided by the Word of God, sometimes His will for our life seems not reasonable or impossible to follow it. Sometimes, we have to spend whole our life to understand some Bible words or sometimes even He rebukes us. Even in those situation, we have to stick to Him, asking the question for the will of God, asking for His guidance or His grace and power. While being wrestling with that challenges with Him, we then realize that we could not do anything with our own strength and become humble, growing into His disciples who rely on the grace of God more and more.
- 기도하옵기는, 우리 어린이들과 가정과 교회에, 어려울 때나 힘들때도 끝까지 주님을 붙쫓는 제자가 되어, 믿음도 성장하고 또 더욱 겸손해 지는 은혜가 있기를 기도합니다.
- We pray that our children, families, and churches may have the grace that we may follow Him even in times of hardship as His disciples, and grow in faith, becoming more humble.

Q1 When you are celebrating your birthday or etc., you prepare delicious dishes and games and invite your friend to enjoy them together, aren’t you? But can those who do not join in that party enjoy those delicious foods or the funny time with you?
여러분의 생일을 맞아, 맛있는 음식도 준비하고 재미있는 프로그램도 준비해서, 친한 친구들을 초대했는데, 다 와주면 좋겠는데, 못오는 친구들도 있잖아요. 그런데, 초대한 친구가 그 자리에 오지 못하면, 맛있는 음식을 먹을 수 있을까요? 또 함께 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있을까요?
(이 질문을 통해서, 예수님께서 우리 아이들을 위해, 아무리 좋은 은혜를 준비해 두셔도, 어려움이 있다고, 힘들다고 예수님께 오지 않으면 그 은혜를 받을 수 없다는 것을 알고, 때때로 힘들어도, 또 때때로 이해되지 않는 일에 도전을 받을 때도, 그 문제를 들고 예수님께 나아와 예수님과 함께 그 문제와 씨름할 수 있기를 소망합니다. 그래서 끝까지 남아 예수님께서 준비하신 은혜와 축복을 모두 받을 수 있기를 소망합니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시면서, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)
(Through this question, I hope our children know that no matter how good grace he has prepared for our children, if they do not come to Jesus, because of difficulties, they cannot receive the grace from Him so that when they were challenged with difficulties or problems, they can come to Jesus with the problem and wrestle with the problem with Jesus and finally they could receive all of the grace and blessings that He has prepared for them. We hope that you will be able to enjoy a conversation of positive listening to your children by empathizing with them when expressing various thoughts, opinions, feelings and experiences, and sometimes asking the reason for your thoughts.)
Q2 We try to do our best to do well, since we love our Lord. It’s really precious heart! But, sometimes we also notice that we cannot do perfectly and experience that it makes us so hard. How can we overcome those challenges?
때때로 우리는 예수님을 사랑하는 마음으로 더 잘 하려고 합니다. 참 귀한 마음입니다. 그런데 하면 할수록 완벽하게 한다는 것이 쉽지 않다는 것 심지어 불가능하다는 것을 깨닫게 되기도 하고, 점점 더 잘해야 한다는 생각이 오히려 짐이 되어 우리를 힘들게 하고 옥죄기도 하는 것을 경험하기도 합니다. 그때 어떻게 하면 좋을까요?
(이 질문을 통하여, 우리 자녀들이 때때로 예수님을 따라가다 보면, 어려운 일도 생기고 심지어 감당하기 버거운 도전을 받을 때도 있는데, 끝까지 예수님 곁에 남아서 예수님께 문제를 내어놓고 묻기도 하고 도전 받기도 하면서 예수님과 함께 해결해 나갈 수 있기를 소망합니다. 그런 과정에서 예수님께 겸손과 인내심을 배우며, 또 믿음도 성장하게 되기 때문입니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시면서, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)
