영과 진리로 예배하는 예배자를 찾으시는 하나님 아버지께서, 우리의 예배를 통해 올려 드리는 모든 감사와 찬양과 영광을 기쁘게 받으실 줄 믿습니다.
We believe that Heavenly Father, who is looking for worshipers who worship with spirit and truth, will gladly receive all the thanks, praise, and glory that we offer through our worship.
지난 주에는, 요한복음 6장 52-29절 말씀을 통하여, 성찬의 의미에 대해서 알아 보고, 우리 모두가 주님과 더욱 친밀한 연합을 이룰 수 있기를 기도하였습니다. 이번 주에는 마태복음 18장 15-20절 말씀을 통하여, 천국의 열쇠중의 하나인 교회의 권징에 대해 알아보고 함께 은혜 나누기를 소망합니다.
Last week, through John 6:52-59, we prayed that we may be united more intimately with Jesus Christ, after knowing the real meaning of Holy Supper. This week, through Mt 18:15-20, we would like to share God’s grace in Christian disciplines in the keys of kingdom.
- 오늘 본문 마 18:18 “무엇이든지 너희가 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이요 무엇이든지 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀리리라” 는 주님의 말씀은 마 16:19장 (매임과 품에 대해 동일한 말씀)과 조금 형태는 다르지만 요한복음 20:23 말씀 (죄사함에 대해 직접적으로 언급) 에도 나오는 말씀입니다. 마 16:16 & 18 말씀에 나오는 것처럼 주님께서는 베드로의 고백 즉 “주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들 이시다”는 고백 위에 주님의 교회를 세우시고, 교회가 주님의 몸으로 여러가지 사역을 감당할 수 있도록 성령의 은사를 공급하실 뿐 만 아니라, 여러가지 제도들을 세워 주셨는데, 세례 즉 주님과의 연합을 표현하고 보증하는 성례에 참여함으로 하나님의 언약 백성으로 지교회의 회원이 되어 하나님의 백성으로서의 거룩하고 또한 사랑하며 사는 삶을 살겠다고 다짐한 성도가, 그러한 삶을 살지 못할 때 죄를 회개케 하고 다시 하나님께로 돌이킬 수 있도록 절차를 세워 주셨는데 이를 교회의 권징이라 합니다.
- Today’s text of Mt 18:18 “whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” shows that church has authority of Christian discipline as Jesus instituted a procedure of how to lead the sinners who did not live as they promised to live in the holy and loving life as Christians in the Baptism which is sign and seal for the union with Christ and through which they became the covenantal people of God as the congregation of the local church which Jesus built on the confession of Peter that “Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God (Mt 16:16)” and sent the Holy Spirit who provides all kinds of gifts by which church can undertake its duty.
- 이렇게 교회가 교회되게 하며, 진리를 수호하고 교회의 순결성을 지켜갈 수 있도록 하는 것들을 일컬어 천국의 열쇠라고 하는데, 하이델베르그 요리문답 제83항에 의하면, 복음의 선포와 회개를 위한 교회의 권징, 두가지가 있는데, 두가지 모두 신자에게는 천국 문을 열어주고 불신자에게는 닫습니다. 첫번째 복음의 선포가 천국의 열쇠인 이유는 복음이 선포되었을 때 참된 신앙으로 복음의 약속을 믿으면 그리스도의 공로로 말미암아 하나님께서 그들의 죄를 사해 주시지만, 불신자들과 위선자들이 회개하지 않는다면 하나님의 진노를 받게 된다는 것을 공적으로 선포함으로써 신자에게는 천국의 문이 열리지만 불신자에게는 닫히게 되기 때문입니다. (하이델베르그 요리문답 Q&A 84) 그리고 두번째 교회의 권징도 마찬가지로 성도들이 비기독교적인 가르침을 믿고 따라살면서, 절차에 따른 계속적인 권면에도 불구하고 자신의 잘못을 떠나기를 거부하면서 결국 교회의 권징에도 불구하고 회개하기를 거부하면, 성례에 참여 시키지 않는 것을 말하며, 진정한 변화를 약속하고 실천할 때 그리스도의 지체로써 그의 교회의 일원으로 다시 받아 들이는 것을 말합니다. (하이델베르그 요리문답 Q&A 85) 그러나 교회의 권징은 그 해당자를 공동체에서 추방하거나 예배를 드리지 못하게 하거나, 공동체로부터의 제외시키거나 죄에 대해 처벌하는 것이 되어서는 안되며, 다만 회개할 때까지 주님의 지체가 되어 성례에 참여하지 못하게 할 뿐 임을 기억해야 합니다. 즉 권징은 처벌이 아니라, 복음의 본질적 요소로 하나님의 말씀을 통한 성령의 역사를 드러내는 것으로 , 권징 받는 사람의 회개와 구원 그리고 그리스도의 지체로서의 화해를 목적으로 하고 있습니다.
- The keys of kingdom are two; the preaching of Holy Gospel and Christian discipline, through which church becomes church and can protect the orthodoxy and purity of the church and the gate of heaven will be opened to the believers and closed to the non-believers as Heidelberg Q&A 83 says. Firstly the kingdom of heaven will be opened by proclaiming and publicly declaring to all believers that as often as they accept the gospel promise in true faith, God because of Christ’s merit, truly forgives all their sins, while the kingdom of heaven will be closed by proclaiming and publicly declaring to unbelievers and hypocrites that as long as they do not repent the wrath of God and eternal condemnation rest on them (HC Q&A 84). And also those who, though called Christians, profess unchristian teachings or live unchristian lives, and who after repeated personal and loving admonitions, refuse to abandon their errors and evil ways, and who after being reported to the church, that is, to those ordained by the church for that purpose, fail to respond also to the church’s admonitions such persons the church excludes from the Christian community by withholding the sacraments from them, and God also excludes them from the kingdom of Christ (HC Q&A 85). But we have to remember that Christian discipline is not the social ostracism, exclusion from worship, exclusion from the community, not a punishment for sin, instead it is not as a matter of the law or judgment, a manifestation of the spirit by the Word of God which is essential to the gospel for the repentance and reconciliation of the sinner to the body of Christ.
- 오늘 본문에서는 예수님께서 형제가 죄를 지었을 경우의 절차를 따라 권면하여 그를 죄에서 건져내야 한다고 말씀해 주셨는데, 첫번째 단계는 “너와 그 사람과만 상대하여 권고하되 만일 들으면 형제를 얻는 것 (v.15)”이라고 말씀해 주신다. 만일 듣지 아니하면 다음 단계로 가는데 두번째 단계는 “한 두사람을 데리고 가서 두세 증인의 입으로 확증하게 하라(v.16)”는 것이다. 만일 그도 듣지 않으면 세번째 단계로 가는데, “교회에 말한다(v.17)”고 말씀하셨는데 이는 신명기 19:15-18 말씀을 근거로 하고 있다. 미주 한인 예수교 장로회 총회의 헌법에 의하면, “진리를 보호하며 그리스도의 권세있는 이름과 존귀하신 영광을 견고하게 하며 악행을 제거하고 교회를 정결하게 하며 덕을 세우고 범죄한 자의 영적 유익을 도모하기 위하여” 권징을 행하며 “마음과 행위가 성경에 위반되는 것이나 혹 사정이 악하지 아니할지라도 다른 사람으로 범죄하게 한 것이나 덕을 세움에 방해되게 하는 것”을 권징에 해당하는 죄로 규정하고 있으며, 당회가 정하는 책벌은 회개 여하에 따라 “권계, 견책, 정직, 면직, 수찬 정지, 제명, 출교”가 있는데, 출교는 끝내 회개하지 아니하는 자에게만 해당한다”고 규정하고 있다.
- In today’s Bible verses, Jesus teaches us the procedure of how to exhort and bring the sinner back; the first step is to go and point out their fault, if your brother or sister sins, so that if they listen to you, you have won them over(v.15)”. But if he or she does not listen, the second step is to “take one or two others along with you, so that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses (v.16)”. Still if he or she refuses to listen, the third step is tell it to the church (v.17)”, based on Deut. 19:15-18. According to the book of church order by Korean American Presbyterian church, Christian discipline is “to protect the truth, to strengthen the authority and honor of Christ, to eliminate offenses, to purify his church, to edify the church and to promote the spiritual welfare of the offender” regarding “any act that is contrary to the Scriptures and even if it is not wicked, it may constitute an offense if it causes others to commit sin or hinders the building of virtue” and “the session may impose these degrees of discipline: admonition, rebuke, suspension, deposition, suspension from communion, expulsion, and excommunication.”
- 오늘 본문 말씀을 통해서 몇가지 은혜를 나누기 원하는 데, 첫번째 오늘 본문을 통해서 지교회가 가지고 있는 권세에 대해 분명한 인식을 가져야 합니다. 교회는 그리스도의 몸으로 그에 합당한 정결함을 유지할 책임과 의무가 있는데, 각 지교회는 권징을 통하여 이러한 주님의 교회의 거룩함을 유지하도록 주님께서 제도화 해 주신 것입니다. 따라서, 주님의 몸된 지교회에서는 세례 학습과정을 통해서 세례를 받는 교인이 이러한 교회의 기준에 대하여 교육을 해야 할 뿐 만 아니라 세례에 합당한 믿음을 가지고 있는지 확인할 필요가 있으며, 또한 주님의 지체로써 성찬에 참여할 합당한 거룩한 생활을 하고 있는지 점검하고 혹 정도에서 벗어난 이들을 바른 길로 인도할 책임과 의무를 가지고 있는 것입니다. 그리고 두번째, 한편으로 성도는 교회이자 또한 그 교회의 공동체 회원으로써 책임과 의무가 있음을 또한 알아야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 즉 믿는 자들로 구성된 교회는 각 지체가 교회를 바르게 세워 나가도록 성령의 은사도 받았음으로 교회의 권징이 제대로 시행되어지도록 해야할 책임이 있을 뿐 만 아니라 한편으로는 교회의 권세에 복종해야할 의무도 지고 있음을 기억하고 교회 교리의 수호와 교회 거룩성의 유지에 함께 노력해야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 그리고 마지막으로 이러한 교회 권징의 시행은 칼빈이 그의 책 기독교 강요에서 여러번 강조한 것처럼 “권징의 시행은 가혹해서는 안되(기독교 강요 12.8)”며 “교회 권징은 온유하게 시행되어야 (기독교 강요 IV.12.9)” 합니다. 그리고 “사람은 오직 하나님의 판단과 그의 손 안에 있는데, 우리가 그 사람을 정죄하고 죽음에 내어주지 말고 오히려 주의 법에 따라서 각 사람의 행위들의 성격만을 판단하자”며 “우리 자신의 판단을 내세우는 것이 아니라 하나님의 판단을 근거로 삼(기독교 강요 IV.12.9)”아야 한다고 말하고 있듯, 죄 범한 사람을 온유하게 대하고 지나친 가혹 행위로 그들을 처벌하여서는 안되며 그들에게 사랑을 나타내도록 해야 한다 (고후 2:8).
- Through today’s Bible text, we would like to learn several things. First of all, I hope we may recognize the authority of local church. The church as the body of Christ, has the responsibility and duty to maintain its purity so that Jesus instituted Christian discipline through which His church can protect its purity. Therefore, as to the catechumen, the church has to educate all these rules and orders, in addition to confirm His faith and continues to check and lead to the holy and faithful life as His people to participate in Holy Supper as His body. And secondly, His saint is not only the church itself who has authority to maintain Christian discipline, but also its member who has the responsibility and duty to be bound to it, i.e., the church of the believers not only have the responsibility to keep Christian discipline in order to build the church in orthodoxy by receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but also as its member, they have to obey to the authority of local church and to keep the truth and its purity. And finally, as Calvin emphasizes several times in his book “The Institutes of Christian Religion” that “but we ought not to pass over the fact that such severity as is joined with a “spirit of gentleness” [Gal. 6:1] befits the church”[1] and “this gentleness is required in the whole body of the church, that it should deal mildly with the lapsed and should not punish with extreme rigor, but rather, according to Paul’s injunction, confirm its love toward them [2 Cor. 2:8]”[2] And also “let us not condemn to death the very person who is in the hand and judgment of God alone; rather, let us only judge of the character of each man’s works by the law of the Lord,”[3] we have to be very careful so that we try to do our best to deal with the sinner in gentleness, not to treat in harshness to manifest our love to them.
- 기도하옵기는, 사랑하는 우리 KPCM 자녀들과 가족들과 교회가, 영적으로 혼탁해져 가는 이 말세지말에, 주님의 정결한 신부로써 아름답고 거룩하게 세워져 하나님께 쓰임받고 영광올려드리는 우리 모두가 되시기를 소망합니다.
- I pray that His beloved KPCM children, families and church may be used as God’s tool to establish His holy and pure church as His pure bride in this end ear to the glory of God.

Q1 You may know that each school has its rules, and also society has its own rules and ethics, and also even various club has its own rules which their members should obey to build up their community properly and to maintain its dignity. I wonder if you have one or two rules which seem good to share your idea or thoughts with your friends? 여러분들 학교에는 학교대로 교칙이 있고 또 사회에도 나름대로 법과 도덕이 있고, 심지어 각종 동호회에도 회칙이 있어서, 소속원들이 그들의 공동체가 바르게 세워지고 품위를 유지하기 위하여 말과 행동을 하도록 요구하고 있습니다. 각자 자기가 소속된 학교나 학원 (태권도 학원등) 이나 사회 공동체에 행동이나 룰 중에 기억에 남거나 특별히 참 좋다고 생각되어 지는 것이 있으면 여러분들의 친구들에게 나누어 주면 좋겠습니다.
(이 질문을 통하여, 우리 아이들이 어떤 형태로든 작든 크든 그룹에 소속되어 있고, 각 그릅 혹은 공동체는 나름대로의 행동의 기준이 있고 지켜야할 룰이 있음을 remind 하기를 원합니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시면서, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)

Q2 As such, local church has its own rules and orders for the Christian life, based on the Bible, context, and tradition. As the member of Korean Presbyterian church of Michigan, I hope you may share one or two important rule or order which you remember or were taught. 교회도 마찬가지로 하나님의 언약 백성 공동체로서, 각각의 지교회는 교단 특성이나 환경과 전통에 따라, 나름대로의 행동 룰과 삶의 기준이 있습니다. 특히 미시간 한인장로교회의 한사람으로써 생각나거나 기억에 남는 행동 기준이나 삶의 기준이 있으면 서로 나눌 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.
(이 질문을 통하여, 우리 자녀들이 학교나 학원, 사회나 미국이라는 나라에 속해서, 나름대로 행동 규칙과 도덕 그리고 삶의 기준에 의해 살아가야 하듯, 교회도 하나님의 언약 백성 공동체로서 반드시 지켜야 할 규칙과 삶의 기준이 있음을 기억하기를 원합니다. 이러한 것들은 성경을 기본으로 하여, 우리가 고백하는 신조 (Creed) 와 신앙고백 (Confession) 그리고 요리문답 (Catechism) 에 잘 요약되어 있고, 저희들이 속한 미주 한인 예수교 장로교회 총회 헌번에도 잘 요약되어 있습니다. 그리고 이러한 것들을 지키지 않았을 경우 권징이라는 제도가 있음을 알았으면 좋겠습니다. 상세한 것을 다 알지는 못하더라도 크리스천으로서의 삶의 기준이 분명히 있음을 우리 아이들이 깨닫는 시간이 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 다양한 생각과 의견과 감정과 경험을 표현할 때 공감해 주시면서, 때때로 생각의 이유도 물어 보시면서 아이들과 적극적 경청과 공감의 대화를 나누실 수 있으시기를 소망합니다.)
(Through this question, I hope our children may understand and remember that there are rules of conduct in KPCM which His people have to obey, such as the rules of school, community and clubs which is based on the Bible, creeds, confessions and catechism and is summarized in the book of Church order of Korean American Presbyterian Church so that if we do not keep them, we will have Christian discipline. Even though we cannot know everything at once, I hope our children may know that surely we have rules of conduct as Christians. When your children express diverse thoughts, opinions, emotions, or experiences, I hope you may empathize with them to enjoy the conversation of empathy through active listening, sometimes asking their thoughts behind.)
